Boost problems...

Can anybody help me? I have an 88 tc 5 speed.. when the car hits boost really fast it lags out and basically kills the car.. it recovers after 30 seconds or so and runs fine after that until it hits boost again almost sounds like it’s getting too much fuel or something. Has anybody experienced this? My old 88 never did this but it’s was built.. this car just hasn’t a Gillis controller and 3 inch exhaust the rest of the car is factory... any help would emfgreatly appreciated!

How much boost are you talking about ?

I'd check timing first.

I'd also put a fuel gage on the fuel rail port and check fuel pressure when static and at boost. Should be a one to one increase for every pound of boost will increase fuel pressure by one pound too. I put a 90 degree fitting on my fuel pressure gage and ran it up under the wiper blade and made a few test runs. If fuel pressure starts dropping you have a fuel issue.

Maybe a VAM issue too ?

10-12 psi if that. Runs great unless you have your foot in it then it builds boost too fast idk it has brown tops in it but idk if they are factory or not... haven’t done a fuel pressure test but I will do that tomorrow and see what it does..

Brown top are standard on the later TCs. If it stumbles, then recovers but takes 30 seconds to do it, that sounds like weak valve spring(s). Or it could be a big air pressure leak when the boost gets high enough, most likely a bad vacuum or boost (intercooler) hose or clamp.

my old 87 had similar issues when I first bought it. It had a bad lower intercooler connection at the turbo to intercooler. At low to no boost it was fine, but when at it's normal 15psi, it would blow air out the ripped connection and drop on its face. It would also blow black smoke out the pipes as it was running rich.
