Boost problems

Gents,

Car is fixed! i replaced all rubber lines going to and from turbo. New autolite plugs and motorcraft wires. Runs great with 16 PSI of boost. Thanks to all for all of you input. I am new to this board but I know now who to go to for questions. Here is a new question. I saw a blue Turbo Coupe on the pictures on the site and noticed that they put an K&N air filter right off the turbo... I thought you could not do that due to the vane meter circuit attached to the air box assembly? I would like to put one of these on. I sthere anything that needs to be done to "fake" out the vane meter signal of can you just unplug it? Also looking for some easy reasonable power upgrades information as well.

Do you remember who the owner of the car with the K&N right off the turbo was? They likely have a speed density aftermarket ECU installed.

With the faster and more refined 87-88 PCMs, the car will run OK at idle and cruise with the VAF disconnected, but will run like crap under boost. Of course, disconnected VAF will also turn on the CEL.

SOme people are running MAF conversion systems on their TCs, but it is not an easy thing to do.

Mods for more power: crank up boost, but with the IHI on 87-88, much past 18 psi the efficiency goes to hell. A T3 turbo is almost a drop in upgrade, and can support more power, higher boost. I am running a T3 at 22-23 psi with stock IC (but with forced air cooling) and water/alky injection with 16 deg base timing with no problems. If you run boot past 19 or so psi, an AFPR to increase base fuel pressure will probably be needed. A larger FMIC would help, as well as advancing base timing a few degrees. 3" DP, larger exhaust with straight thru mufflers makes a big improvement. And, of course, get rid of the factory aixbox intake system which is very restrictive.

Can you get rid of the air box with out getting rid of the VAF? I thought it was a complete unit?

VAF and air box are seperate. Air box is mounted above the L shaped metal plate bolted to the fender, VAF is monted under the plate. Air comes in thru the plastic duct from the fender, thru the oval air filter housing (one of the ulgiest air filter housings I have ever seen, IMO), out the bottom of the air filter housing thru a big screen thing, thru a 90 deg rubber bend, and into the VAF. Talk about a convoluted air path!
