Blown headgasket, head, and block?

Yeah, that is what I have planned. The NA motor I have is a less than 90k miles motor, so it should not need too much, just a good honing and cleanout. I plan to reuse the old turbo pistons (assuming they are in decent shape and within tolerances when I pull them out), do new rings, new main and rod bearings, maybe new cam bearings and a RR cam depending on what head I go with (mine reworked or the one in the for sale section), and a new oil and water pump. Anything else I should check/change/redo while I have it out?

One other question: are the rods in the turbo motor any different than the NA motor? I rememeber reading someplace that the crank is the same, but I don't know on the rods...

As far as I know the rods are the same. I would recommend new rod bolts. Also check the condition of the gear on the aux shaft and the shaft bearings. Other than that is sounds like you got a solid plan

Thanks Pete D, I had not really thought of rod bolts. Where do you get them? ARP I assume...

I will keep you all posted. Thanks for the input!

the block could be salvaged but it would have to be fire brazed and then milled back down

to keep proper diston to deck clearances
I would say $150-$175 to do that but that will not include cleaning the block $40
or the hone to run std pistons $35.00
then add R&R aux cam bearings and freeze plugs
about $35 in labor and $25.00 in parts

you an use the N/A block, but do not tap the block, Put a fitting in the oil pan and have a custom made return line from the turbo to the pan made.
Owns more Turbo FORDS than the law should allow....and still getting more

If you are very worried about it, I have a spare lower end block just sitting and wasting away if you are interested. It has pan, crank, rods, pistons, oil pump. It was rebuilt by a bunch of idiots that were V8 minded, you know the ones that don't know anything about our four cylinder motors. It has the Forged Pistons, but it has been bored 0.040 over (odd size). I figure that it would just need a good hone job and decking and you would be good. I can let it go for $150. I pulled it because the rings were bad. I had 18PSI boost on that sucker and it ran like a top, just low on compression. I think that the rebuilders used iron rings instead of the moly ones.

Thanks for the advice!
I kind of figured that the block would just be a good anchor now: it just does not seem worth it to do all that work and spend all that $ on it when I have an 80k mile NA block just sitting there, and putting the fitting into oil pan should be really easy.
Again, thanks for the advice BogusSVO. Also, thanks to everyone here. This is a really good board.

Yeah, up until Nov when I bought this car, I was one of those V8 ogres (in some ways I still am!).
But, I hope this car will turn me on to the forced4 world. In the short time before the head gasket blew, I KNEW it would be worth fixing it...

Thanks for the offer t-bird88, but I think I will just use this NA block I have. It should do it fairly well.
On a side note, I notice you are from OK. We go to the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet in Tulsa every year we can. Not sure if you ever make it down there, but it is usually a good time.

how long did you run it with the blown HG??

I will answer the above 2 ways:

#1 (when I got the car running right after I bought it)
Believe it or not, it ran for about 20 mins before blowing what I think was a new HG, and that was WITH overboosting due to the wastegate being UNHOOKED when I got the car. Also, as I have said, it ran rather well considering what I found when I pulled the head off...

#2 (to cause the damage to the block evident in the pics)
This I have no idea of. Does anyone have any idea of how long someone would have to run with a blown headgasket to cause damage like that?
