blower motor, heater core, flushing the system

My blower motor makes a lot of noise, only works with the fan switch on high, isn't producing much air( if any ), I can feel the heat rising from the dashboard if I put my hand there. I want to know how to properly flush my cooling system and hopefuly rule out changing the heater core. Any tips would be much apreciated.
1987 Turbo Coupe,Black with red cloth, 5spd, 70,000 miles. In the process of being dissasembled, detailed and reassembled using the best of the parts that I have from 6 past T-birds. 17" TSW Chrome rims with Wanli rubber, Sony disc player with Type "R" Alpine subs, K&N cone, Centerforce Clutch, MSD Ignition, Sequential tailights, B&M Short Shifter. Much more work to be done but lovin' every minute of it. Updates to come...

For the blower motor, with everything turned off, push open the blower door and check the "squirrel cage" for any paper, leaves, etc caught on the fins. Even the smallest item will throw it out of balance and make noise and shake the dash. For the core, I disconnect the hoses outside and use a garden spray gun connected to a hose plugged into the outlet side of the core and flush away. All kinds of nasties come out of there (mainly old gasket material and sealant).

If it only works on high, you likely have a blown blower resistor assy. If is bolted into the bottom of the blower housing, and has around 4 wires to it. Removing the blower case to clean it out is relatively easy.... an hour job at the most.

I looked inside the birdcage to see if there was anything in the fins and I couldn't see the fins. There was so much debris, mainly what looks like insulation, that I couldn't see them. Cleaned them out. Lots of airflow at the birdcage now. Blower no longer noisy either. Still minimal airflow when I switch the controls to any other vents. Saturday I guess I'll do as you suggests and clean out the box. I suspect the fins of the core may be so covered in this debris that the airflow I can feel at the birdcage can't get through to the other vents. We'll soon see.Thanx to both of you
