Big Problem

Big problems here guys. I think last week my cat plugged up but good after driving in sub zero temps. My car is running rich, so much more condensation in the pipes, possibly froze the cat up good. The car sounded like it was running on 3 cyl, and was putting a little black smoke out the tail. i sprayd some warm water under the car in the vicinty of the cat, and no more problem. Well, today, i had a problem wich might be related. I was driving, and went to accelerate on to a major highway, and the boost spiked past 20, where normaly its at about 17-18. It constantly does this now. i also noticed a rattling when i rev the engine quick at idle. When I let off the throttle, it rattles loud enough to barely be hgeard in the car. I replaced some vac lines today too, thinking it was a vac problem. Nothing changed. Gillis is hooked up the same as it always has been and correctly. I cant tell if the rattle is comming from the turbo, the wastegate area, or the cat. I dont hear any screaming or whining from the turbo (out of the ordinary anyways) at full boost, it just spikes over 20. My vac readings have also gone from 19HG at idle to about 15-15 at idle. Whats going on here?? I hope I dont have to replace a turbo here.... anybody?

The rattling might be the heat shield around the cat converter. This is common. Come people clamp it with giant hose clamps. The other thing would be to check the lifting eye that is bolted to the very last bolt that holds the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. If the eye works loose it will rotate back toward the fire wall and vibrate on the fire wall and make noise.

On the boost/vacuum issue: Relax, the turbo has nothing to do with vacuum readings at idle unless it's got a rag sucked into the compressor wheel.
Check the cam timing first. Then clean the inside of the gillis valve with brake cleaner or electrical cotact cleaner.

What have you done to find the cause of it running rich? Have you pulled the codes or done any fuel pressure checks

i do not think the ratiling is comming from cat,how ever it could be. The reason why it is running rich has been narrowed down to the ECT. With everything else has been checked or replaced. Another reason why I beleave the rich condition is caused by the ECT is because my cooling fans are turning on way latter then they should "to high of a temp". Could it be the waste gate sticking shut? Could a vac. leak somewhere in the system cause a over boost?

The WG could be sticking. Disconnect the rod from the WG pivot arm and see if the arm then moves easily through a 45* arc. If it doesn't move freely, that's a problem.

A boost signal leak could cause a boost spike. Check the hose from the gillis to the WGA.

A restriction in your exhaust can and will cause your boost to jump upwards. The rattling could be your cat clogging.

I found a loose heat sheild for the nimber 3 plug wore. and it was rattling. Boost still spikes, but after the new coolent temp sensor, the car isnt running rich any more.
