Belt Pulley (Gates Part Number?)

Ordered the Gates 38001 pulley from RockAuto as found in their catalog. This is the smooth steel pulley (drivers side) for the serpentine belt system on the 87-88 TC.

This pulley will not work due to the recessed area where the shoulder washer goes being too small. The shoulder washer actually hits the pulley rather then the bearing area. The original style pulley has more of a dish shaped recess to the edge, this pulley was not recessed except for the area over the bearing.

Checked the Gates website and this is the pulley they list... anyone use this pulley with perhaps a different shoulder washer?

Looks like the Dayco 89006 would fit, but there is no mention of the pulley being steel or drivers side, but it looks smooth from the photo. There is also an AC Delco, but that is the same 38001 number as the Gates.

Has anyone gotten the correct pulley from RockAuto? Part number? (checked the part # forum first)

I got the correct tensioner assy from them a few years back, but that wasnt just the pulley, it was the whole tensioner assy.

I got a tensioner assy by Gates from Ebay recently

I went to a local carquest, they had the same 38001 pulley listed... I bought one there a few years ago and it was correct. but wasn't a Gates! I'm pretty sure it was a Dayco... I'll order one and see!

I'll look into the whole tensioner assemby... I guess it won't hurt to replace the whole thing, just a little extra $$$.

I have used Dayco tensioners and pulleys in the past on several applications, and found them to be high quality and long lasting.

Nope. Ran into the same issue, I just re-greased mine and hoped for the best....

It appears as though the Gates part is listed as the replacement pretty well throughout the parts system. Luckily there are others, Dayco and Four Seasons which look to be correct.

I have the Four Seasons on order from RockAuto... the photo looks correct

Now Gates sells the entire tensioning assembly, and of course that one works with the Gates pulley as it appears from the photos.

Really just need a smaller shoulder washer to use the Gates part, but not sure where to find that. Of course the helpful parts guy indicated people just throw out the washer and use only the bolt... go figure!

I had sent a message on the Gates website about their pulley... I'm surprised they even responded!

We produce both tensioner assemblies for this car and recommend changing out the entire tensioner assembly rather than just the pulley. As with all moving parts, tensioners are a wear item and must be replaced throughout the life of the car. If you choose not to replace the entire tensioner assembly, you could replace the pulley only but then you are using components from different manufacturers. The pulley/bearing assemblies produced by Gates Corp. use premium seals and grease so the dust shield (washer) isn’t required to be reinstalled.

Received the Four Seasons #45975 from RockAuto... This is an exact replacement and is what should be ordered if you want to keep the dust washer.

Funny that this one included a tech sheet indicating the dust washer may not fit and isn't needed (premium seal etc...) even though the surface is quite concave. Would need to be a pretty large washer to not fit
