belt eating car

my 87 TC that I use for a daily driver is showing signs of eating up belts and I can't see a good reason for it. It's eating up the long serpentine belt. I've went through 2 older belts and finally put on a new one a while back and it went throught that one just as fast as the others. Everything seems to be aligned and the idler pulley doesn't seem worn or sloppy. I wouldn't be so surprised if I'd bought a reall cheapy belt but I got the expensive Dayton Top Cog belt for it...anybody have something similar happen?...

If it's chewing up more toward the edge, best bet is that one of your idlers if fubar. It an be the pulley bearings worn, allowing slop or it can be the spring mechanisim messed up which allows the pully to be out of alignment. It can be subtle so look at alignment from the sides of the car.

Also check resistance to turning in the alt and PS pump

if you are spinning it hard...try a belt just a smidge longer, so the tentioner is not as stout on it
