BAP Sensor

I have found out here the 88 TC has a BAP sensor instead of a MAP sensor that most cars use. Ours is located under the air cleaner. I have been told by a Ford dealership that mine is bad after pulling codes and also the mechanic said had to "jump" wiring since normal connection was not reponding to get codes. I have a check engine lite staying in hard and takes about 15 attempts to start car when cold than finally turns over, after warmed up starts well. It is very sluggish, BAP bad???

First off I'd run away from this Ford Dealership. The BAP sensor isn't under the air box. It is mounted on a bracket on the Passenger Side inner fender. This is the same bracket the IRCM is mounted to.

I doubt that the BAP is the cause of your problems.

Do yourself a favor and go buy a $30.00 code scanner. Then post what codes you get.

Did the dealer check the fuel pressure ?

I originally had the upper radiator fan smoke on me & no longer work. I took car out next day to test run it and driving maybe 5 mph going over speed bump it started lurching & bucking and putting out screeching noise limped home & shut it down. Next day attempted to start and would crank only. I had it towed to local shop & mechanic swore was fuel pump bad since could not here come in when turn key on. He put new pump in and car now ran but badly putting out black smoke fuel pressure at 36#. He was at a loss of what was wrong. I later found out fuel pressure regulator was maintaining 80# way too high, replaced it which smoothed out engine & no black smoke. Thats when I took it to Ford and they said BAP Sensor bad.

There are articles in the Technical Articles, linked off the home page, that tell how to pull codes and another on how to do it using the check engine light. Do it for yourself and let us know what you get.

Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back in.

The thing under the stock air box is the VAF (vane air flow) meter, not the BP sensor. Go to a mechanic who knows his ass from a hole in the ground, or DIY. The VAF could be the cause ofyour problems.
