Bad Throw Out Bearing ?????

For about a week or so now I have had a "whirring" sound from my clutch / tranny...

It is loudest in first gear and fairly loud in second gear. It is related to rpms.

Then 2-3 days ago I began having the famous "cricket" sound from my T.O. Fork. I removed the slave cover and put some grease between the Fork and the ball joint and that fixed the "crickets"...but the "whirring" noise is still there. I know the springs on my fork are really loose....

Tonight I happened to be parked in my TC with the engine running while waiting for my son. I put the tranny in neutral and took my foot of the clutch pedal. As I was lifting my foot off the pedal I immediately heard a really loud "whirring" sound. Pushed the pedal in and it slowed down and stopped. Released the pedal and it was back. This sound is also rpm related as it increase in frequency as I rev'ed it up.

My only thoughts are that it's the T.O. Bearing and/or the loose springs on my Fork. Any other thoughts ? I just want to be sure that it's not a possible tranny problem ! (Fluid level is fine). Do you think the Clutch Disk and PP are OK ? Or could it be the Pilot Bearing ? HELP ! [Image: frown.gif]

Damn ! I guess this means that I will probably have to end up dropping the transmission and replacing the Bearing and Fork ! In the meantime do you think it's hurting anything to drive it ??? It drives OK except for the "whirring" noise.

Please help ASAP with your thoughts and ideas guys ! I guess I'd driven it for a month or two with no problems (must be a record) so something had to F**K up with it !!!!

Mine has been like that for about 2 years. I only drive it around 2000 miles a year so it isn't like I put a ton of miles on it. I would change it if you have the time to do it. I would also check the pilot bearing while you're in there.

I hate to say it but it sounds like a trans bearing may be going out. The throwout bearing is really only under a load when you depress the cluth. When you let the clutch out you engage the trans input shaft and start rotating the trans, which is when you heard the noise. A bad throwout bearing will usually make its presence known when you depress the clutch not when its released. I hope im wrong!

All the sounds you're describing are exactly what mine was doing. My clutch fork had a broken spring finger so I replaced it, also put in a new t/o while I was in there. Noise is gone.

OK...uhmmm...well !

I hope to God it's not the tranny...but it makes since that the only thing that's spinning when the clutch is out is the input shaft.

One last gasp of hope though...what if the TO Bearing came disconnected from the Fork ?

Or, what if the Pilot Bearing was bad ? If that were true, maybe the input shaft / pilot bearing is the noise I hear ?

Same as Glenn here, mine's been doing that since I bought it about 2 years ago. Louder when started and not in gear with the clutch out. Except I drive my car about 25,000 miles a year. (Well, I did before the head broke)

It could be mis-alignment between the input and output shaft of the trans. This could be caused from a badly worn pilot-bearing, input shaft bearing at the front of the housing, or the needle bearings where the input and output shaft meet. You say it makes the noise when stopped with clutch engaged and in 1st and 2nd gear. Can you also detect the noise in 3rd but not in 4th? Typically, when one of these bearings is worn enough to make noise, it won't be detectable in 4th because of the ratio being 1-1 or direct. The input and output shafts must be turning at different speeds to hear the noise. I've found that usually when the noise your describing can easily be heard, it is the bearing that supports the input shaft at the front of the trans housing. I do hope though that it's something simpler than the trans. Good luck.
