Anyone Have Specs On The Turbos in 88 T-birds?

What's going on everyone? I'm in the process of rebuilding an 88 t-bird. Before I drop the new engine in there, I want to upgrade the turbo. The turbo that I have in there right now is going to go towards another car that I have that has a smaller engine. I've heard the 88 t-bird turbos referred to as the IHIRHB-52 (as stated in the "technical articles" page) but I haven't been able to find any information on the web when I type in "IHIRHB-52". So, does anyone know anything about these turbos? ex: how fast they spool? What range they perform best at? internal or external wastegate? what kinda psi I can push out of it? . . . . Just stuff like that. Any info on the turbo used in the 88 will be helpful. Thanks.

the turbo is a Warner-Ishi IHI RHB-52 model turbo. it spools up really quick (in the 2000-3000 rpm range, depending on how free flowing your exhaust is), but runs out of steam around 5500 rpms or so. it will produce a max of around 18 lbs of boost efficiently. it has an internal wastegate. most people install a Garrett T3 turbo, as found on the 83-86 turbocoupes, as a performance upgrade. it's bigger, takes a little longer to spool up, but doesn't heat the air as much, will pull to rev limiter, and will support 24 lbs of boost!

hope this helps.

oh, if you're putting the IHI on a smaller engine, the RPM point where it runs out of steam will definately be higher. good luck!

I have a quick question. How much PSI can I run on my 87 if I installed the T3 but kept the stock injectors, fuel regulator, and pump? I have 3" downpipe to 2 1/2" duals w/ gillis valve and K&N. What if I installed a 255HP fuel pump and AFPR but kept Stock injectors? Any ideas?

dont quote me, but i think 24 psi would be safe, but i'm not sure if your intercooler would handle it. that's with the 255 and afpr. with a front mount 24 psi will definately be find. just my $0.02

the only promblem with running stock injectors and with a afpr with a 255lph fuel pump is that the stock injectors can't put out much more with fuel turned up than what they do stock your best bet is to get 42lbhr injectors i have that set up even before i got the 255lph i had the 42lbhr with a afpr with the fuel turned up and the boost turned up a to 17psi on the ihi what a difference

Alright Thanks. I have the 255HP Pump and AFPR in my garage just not on the car yet. I'm in the process of looking for a T3 and some sort of front mount IC. (by the way anyone have a T3 or front mount IC they're willing to trade for 87-88 parts?) So when all thats on the car 24 psi is safe...? Thanks
