confused & curious

So my new ESSLINGER Aux. shaft and Dist gear set came in yesterday. I noticed a C clip on the end of the Aux. shaft where the gear is. Is that gear now removable from the shaft? If not, why is there a clip? And if yes, why wasn't the gear alone found on any of my search lists??
