Anyone ever install a turbo charger outlet gasket?

Gots an odd one.

Traced back a lot of our 'noise' issues to the turbo charger output/down pipe.  Bolts where not quite tight, and one in fact snapped off.  (So Heli Coil time after I extract that left over bolt)

I checked the parts area and noted the part number that would cure this,  Remflex 18-005.  That is supposed to be the T3/T4 Hybrid Turbo Outlet/ Down Pipe Gasket for the Ford 2.3L Turbo from 1974-1993.

However after purchasing that-  It's not even close.  That part number 18-005 is a different design and has 5 bolt holes.  This outlet pipe off the Turbo has 4 bolts.   The parts car has the exact same 'elbow' for the turbo, and I've attached a photo of it.

Remflex was extremely nice to talk with, and I sent their 'info' email the same photo.  She wasn't aware we had the oddball one.  Our 1987 parts car has the exact same exhaust elbow.

Has anyone done this before?  The seam isn't 100% flat and it's puffing out exhaust  I had things apart, but reassembled after I noted it was the wrong gasket.  And of course the one bolt that wasn't that tight to start with-  Snapped off when trying to snug it down.  Typical.  I'll be removing the entire manifold and doing some extraction work on the broken bolt.

Hey Tedy, That turbo elbow you have in the picture is an IHI elbow from an 87-88 TC, not a T3 style 5 bolt like in earlier Turbo Coupes. You need to find one for an IHI or take that elbow to a machine shop and have them plane it down. Maybe use a little copper RTV as well to help fill in the small marks.

Well that explains a lot!

So the turbo unit is made by  "IHI"?    I can probably take that to the local machine shop and have them mill it down.  (And maybe extract the studs....They are rusted in place.)

RemFlex is still working on trying to figure that out,  If I can go with one of their graphite gaskets?  That will save the headache of having a machine shop get involved.

Thanks!!

Yeah, so the 87-88 Turbo Coupes used a different turbo than the previous 83-86 ones. The 87-88 were manufactured by Warner-Ishi, or IHI. The older ones were standard Garrett T3's, same as the Mustang SVO's and Merkur XR4Ti's as well. The smaller IHI turbos on the 87-88's made boost real quick to help in normal street driving, but the T3's made more power overall and could make more boost. The IHI's were about done at 18psi, where as the T3's could go 20+psi. I would take yours to a machine shop and have them plane it.
