i just replaced my turbo like 3 months ago with a used IHI i got off ebay, had some shaft play but was less than 200 bucks and that was all i had at the time. now like 3k miles later this turbo is starting to howl when i spool it a little and let off, still makes boost but howls when i let off. which im guessing means the bearings are on they're way out. anyone know where i can get a decent turbo cheap? how much work/money is it to change it over to the t3/t4? this blows :-( i wonder how long i can drive it like this if i really baby it

mine souded like a supercharger once then i got really mad and held it to the floor and spun the hell out of the tires all thru 2nd gear then it stopd sounding weird, lol, i wouldnt recomend it.. t3 will just bolt up if it is internally wastegated, other wise u would have to get a manifold,wastegate

Was the shaft play axial or radial?? A small amt of radial play is OK, but you shouldnt have any axial play.

it did have a small amount of axial shaft play. i should have known better but i was broke and these things were few and far between, i couldn't even find another one.

justin my turbo howls when it spools ecspecially when the eng. is cold and then you dont hear it as much as it warms up. Ive owned ALOT of turbo cars and most did that. If its still boosting fine and not smoking i wouldnt worry to much.

Well its boosting fine but howls on decel, and its leaking oil into the intake. So its def not a normal noise

Well I talked to the guy from evergreen turbo today and I'm getting a t3 from him. Don't know a lot about turbos but I think he said its a .48\60 ported and clipped, and something about an extended compressor wheel? I dunno, hopefully its a big improvment

It will be. You will need a t3 type oil return line. You also WANT (read necessary) use a new oil supply line.
