I made this one about a year ago and it has gotten me through...

1. Removal of followers & weak stock springs in head #1
2. Installation of double springs on head #1
3. Removal of the double springs & followers from head #1 after a wiped cam.
4. Removal and re-installation of followers & good stock springs in head #2 to prep for it to replace head #1.
5. Removal of followers in head #2 after ANOTHER wiped cam (result of a bad HLA)
6. installation of roller followers in head #2.

PARTS LIST: (All available at Lowes)
1: ~14" long piece of 1" square steel tube. They come in 2' lengths.
2: 4 - 4"x4" L-Brackets (2 per side)
3: 2 - 1/4-20x1.5" bolts & 2 nuts

TOTAL COST:
Maybe $10-$15 - I can't find the steel bar on Lowes' web site and I can't remember exactly how much I paid for something a year ago.

PROCEDURE:
1: Cut the square steel tube down to 14" or so.
2: Drill out two of the holes on each L-bracket so the 1/4-20 bolts will fit through.
3: Set and L-bracket on the steel tube at an angle and mark were to drill the holes (see photo for placement and angle of L-brackets)... then drill 'em. A drill press really helps to get the holes going straight through so the L-brackets line up with each other on either side.
4: bolt two L-brackets on either side and you're done!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is maybe a 20 minute project and it'll last a long time. It does take a little getting used to as the L-Brackets like to flex a bit as you compress the spring. I'm sure they would not flex much if you had a way to weld them together, but I don't so it is what it is. The nice thing about this particular setup is that you can compress all of the springs from either side of the cam (pulling or pushing).

Here are a couple of photos of my tool next to the Essy tool. I think it's pretty obvious which is which!

I have another - much more interesting project that I'm working on now. If it works like I think (hope) it's going to work, it'll be posted on the board as well. We'll find out in a week or two... mwhahaha

I just fabbed a version of this using thick wall 1" round tube instead of square;
and I MIG'd the 4 angle brackets both to the tube and each other

I'll report back on how it works,
and get some pix if y'all promise not to criticize my MIG work too much Wink

lol getting ready to change valve seals in car, along with (of course) VC & IM gaskets...

That's what I would like to have been able to do, but I don't have a welder, access to a welder, or any welding skills whatsoever!
