AMP gauge not reading '88 Turbo Coupe

I installed the 3g alt a while back on my 88 Turbo Coupe, hooked it up just like the info I got off this site, but the amp gauge does not read any charging or discharging. I tripple checked the connections on the alt. to ensure the wires were hooked up right, which they are. I read approx. 14.5 volts on my meter, so I do know it's charging. I haven't had any trouble with the car, but would like to be able to see my amp gauge show a charge or discharge. Any help would be great! Thank you

Did it used to work? If it did, you are in the minority. In general they never move.

I thought I saw one move once. But it might have been a bump in the road or a drug induced hallucination. Don't worry, it never moved again Big Grin

My amp gauge moved on time when I was on a remote highway in northern Arizona. Then I looked up there was this spherical object hovering above the road.

Thanks for the info, it isn't going to work. Why is that? Are these gauges cheap, or only designed to last for so long?

To the best of my knowledge, the ceramic, wire coated bar on the back of the cluster acts a means for it to read the AMPS without actually running the B+ through gauge. It still puts quite a load on the traces and connections, which tend to burn out.

Just my $.02

I got a voltmeter from a newer tbird and put the meter movement in my '88 cluster. I used the amp gauge face that was in my '88 cluster. It took some trial and error, but it works great.
With the switch on, 12 volts puts the needle in the middle of the gauge. Charging goes up. If the alternator is not charging the needle goes below the 1/2 way mark.

It took me awhile to do mine, but I explained it to David C and he did his in a couple of hours.

The stock alternator on the TC puts out more amperage than most amp guages can register. Most amp guages read -60 to +60 amps.

The TC has a voltmeter in the dash voltage is not the same as amperage. A 3G alt would burn up a amp gauge just as the stock alternator would.
