Am I gaining or loosing power

I just got a front mount Ford Motorsport spearco intercooler and a T3 turbo to replace my IHI turbo and intercooler that mounts over the turbo and next to the hot exhaust. Someone told me by moving the intercooler forward I will cause the turbo to work harder because of the added distance and in turn loose power. I thought by creating a cooler air charge and stepping up to the bigger compressor wheel on the stock T3, that I would get more power. Am I correct? If yes how much power will I gain?

Also Performance Techniques had shown me the compressor wheel for the "60" series upgrade, but it looked huge and looked like it would take some time to spool up.I am not planning on doing major head work or engine internals and the car is my everyday driver. Is my choice OK??

I would prefer the front-mount to the stock IC. Yes, there is more piping but the new IC will be in a better location (cooler air). I think the downside to that Motorsport kit is the small diameter boost pipes. However, with the stock radiator being as wide as it is (30"), I think they did the best they could to make the kit fit as a bolt-in. You won't lose much by the added piping. Check out a SAAB 9000 turbo some time. It's a 2.3 as well, with a large front mount - the IC tubes are at the bottom, so there's more than 10 feet of piping between the turbo and throttle body.

Definitely (if cash permits) do the front-mount and upgraded T3.
Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.

In selecting the turbo, there is a lot of factors to consider, and I'm no expert. Two things jump out from what you said. It's a daily driver and you aren't going to do much if any work inside the head or engine.
From the daily driver standpoint , where is you engine working MOST of the time? Probably no above 4000 or 4500 rpm. If that's true, the you don't want a turbo that's just getting started in that range. The other thing is what mods will you do or not do that "help" the turbo do it's job. If you aren't going to port the head and exhaust manifold to help flow , then you don't need (or want??) a real high flowing/slower spooling turbo. Just food for thought.

Pete, I have a high flow exhaust, 3" downpipe,K&N filter, bypass valve, custom built ram air, 255 intank fuel pump, turbonetics boost control, and a BBK fuel pressure regulator (sweet, it comes with a fuel pressure gauge mounted to it)

The only thing I plan to do later is buy a Power Heads head that I will have O ringed, and forged pistons on my new stock block. (30,000 miles from now)

Do you think my current set up will work good with my T3 and front mount intercooler? What do you think of my future plans?

I don't think you will lose power with the set-up you are talking about. The bigger turbo will just have more lag. Your power will come on at a higher rpm which is what Pete was saying. But running a bigger turbo means more boost and a front mount intercooler means running more boost SAFELY. All things that make more power. But if you don't want to make the air flow better throughout your engine, (intake, exhaust manifold and head all ported) then you are only hurting your power goals. The big exhaust is certainly taking a step in the right direction. Free up the air and make it fly!

Rdog, I think the T-3 and the front mount would be a great next step for what you have now. I think you will be impressed with the improvement.

On your future plans, realise that Powerheads wants a good crackfree head in exchange or they work on your head so there is downtime involved. I've "heard" that their flow numbers are not all that great. Might want to investigate that. Also why do you think you need to O-ring the head. It's a precision (sp) job. If not done right it doesn't work. It is also not needed except for very high boost levels, far beyond the flow capabilities of the MS front mount. Please investigate that further.

Pete, which head would you suggest. I was looking at the Esslinger head as well, however when I went on their website, the answers to my questions made me feel like I was dealing with knuckleheads. What do you know about them or who would you suggest?
