Air diverter

Hi

My air diverter doesn't work all the sudden (Vac is around 20 on the gauge so it's not a leak i guess), the air just comes out the defrost opening no matter what I set the dial to (panel or floor). What can cause this and how do I trouble shoot it? 88 Stang. Thanks

Assuming you have the manual AC/heat system,
the 2 doors that control where the air flows )panel, floor or defrost) are vacuum operated. You may have a broken line (hose) or it may have come off.

Both directional doors are on the driver's side end of the evaporator case - the whole big black box under the dash. I don't have it scanned but maybe I can get to it later tonight.

is there only one vac line going to that thing Pete? I do see a cluster of vac lines under the dash close to the diverter switch and I made sure all those were good and tight. Couldn't find a vac line connector on the door assembly though. is the connector supposed to be on the left side of the box when u look at it from inside the car? I have an 88 stang

If it only blows out defrost, the entire system has lost vac.... if everything in the HVAC looses vac, it is designed to go to defrost. Check the vac line that runs from the vac tree to the pass side along the top of the firewall. Look for the line with a T in it where one side of the T goes in thru the firewall, and the other side goes into the pass side fender. The line into the fender goes to a vac storage can. If all the vac lines under the hood liik OK, the line to the vac can might have fell off, or the vac can cracked.

Right on the money Jeff! Thanks. It was a broken hose right at the T.
