I've had two birds converted to R134. Completely drain the system. Get a new dryer. Replace all the seals. Replace the fittings and you are off and running.

R134 doesn't get as cold R12, but it is doable. Difference is in my whitebird with R134 I am rarely tempted to turn the A/C down. My blackbird with R-12 I will sometimes turn down the cool.

Last bird I had converted cost (with labor)
about $275.

I'm running R-134a from the Interdyne kit. A local shop evacuated the R-12 for free provided I let them keep it, and I did the conversion as specified on the box. The A/C works, although it is noticeably weak. I asked a friend who is an A/C mechanic about replacing the dryer and o-rings, and he said that it was a good idea, but not necessary.

As far as dryer, I was told the same thing. I didn't HAVE to replace it. However, any car that I've converted I've had leakage problems that caused me to have to do A/C work. Thus I changed all the o rings. I have one bird that is still on R-12. Pretty sure the compressor is going to die as it is noisey but until it does, I'm leaving the R-12 alone.

As far as dryer, again was told it didn't have to be done, but a 13 year old dryer...
decided that I wanted the best I could have since I knew R-134 was inferior in cooling properties to start with.

I've converted all 3 of my TC's.The '83 was the first & I didn't install a new drier & it's still fine after years of use. Time after time I see posts saying R-134 isn't as cold. How is 38 degrees w/ r-12 colder than 38 degrees w/ r-134?? When converting, you only charge 85% of what the system originally used or you'll get higher pressures and it won't be as efficient.
