I appreciate the thoughs mike.
I'm not that worried about maintenance though.
We bought a '95 Mitusbishi Montero on '03 with 74K on it that I've managed to maintain up to now having over 200K. That's gone as far as pulling the heads for a rebuild. Just got done swapping the a/c compressor as well.

My biggest concern with a high mileage replacement is the auto trans.

You know, It all comes down to how much you like the car and how many good memories you've made in or with the car. I just put mine back on the road after 4 years of storage, and realized how much I missed driving this car. Not to mention the fact that I drove it 25 miles just to see a good freind from years past, just so we could relive some younger years just by taking the bird for a ride. The smile on his face that reached each of his ears, after driving it, was worth any dollar amount I've ever put into it. Sounds like a choice none of us can make for you. My main reason for keeping mine is so my 6 year old boy has a neat and fast car to start his driving experience in................
I'd rather be hated for what I am, than to be loved for what I am not.

Maybe I just got lucky. I've owned 2 TC's, been driving atleast one daily since about 1995. I have not modified either one until about 6 mos. ago. I kept them stock and only spent money on the usual maintenance stuff. My exhaust fell off twice and both times I put the stock replacement stuff back on. In the meantime these cars I'll never replace. They started when I wanted them to, always got me where I needed to go, and being 4 cylinders with a 5 speed it seemed like a tank of gas lasted forever. My first one averaged almost 32mpg on a tank of gas. My current one did for a while then it dropped into a range comparable to yours. I've since done a complete tuneup and replaced a few items in the fuel system with upgrades and now, set at stock specs - my mileage has krept back up over 30 mpg. That said - my drive (30 miles 1 way) has few stops and I keep my fuel switch at reg. so I don't have the temptation to enjoy the boost at every stop. I don't think I've put 6 grand in both cars (not including oil, filters, gas) since I've owned a TC. Personally, I wouldn't give up hope. If you've been faithful with your maintenance it shouldn't take much to get it back to where you want it.
As far as the body goes - mine is also pretty rough. But I only have cosmetics that need work. I wish I'd been more diligent at lookign things over on my '87 and caught the frame damage/rust at an earlier (fixable) stage, but my '88 is still strong where it needs to be.
When I bought my first TC, I was only looking for an economical car as a DD that I could have a bit of fun in. It has been that and a whole lot more.
I'm also keeping mine because my wife (who is NOT into cars at all) thinks it is cool.
