Adding a gauge

So I picked up an oil temp and pressure gauge for the bird. Originally, I wanted to keep the in-dash gauge working.. but it looks like it might be a more-than-trivial amount of work to do. So, planning on putting the new sensor in the stock location. The temp gauge sensor - I'm probably gonna tap and seal a fitting into the oil pan. I thought about modifying the pan drain plug, but then that means having to deal with the sensor and wiring every time I change the oil.

I used a copper T fitting from the hardware store to relocate the stock oil pressure sticking out horizontally toward the driver side fender, and the fitting for an additional mechanical OP gauge sticking straight up. This was very easy to do with the head off the engine, but would require at least removing the upper intake to get enough room.

To mount the electric sender for my oil temp gauge I used a big, like half inch drill to drill into the pan and stopped when the drill just barely broke thru. Then used a large tapered punch and BFH to open up a hole to the size of the sensor mounting bung. Used a NPT tap slathered with grease to tap some threads. Being sure everything was completely clean, I put the bung in with JB Weld and put more JB Weld around the area. Been 100 percent leak free for over 10 years.

Here is one way of modifying the sending unit for two OP gauges.

Yea, I was afraid that any option of running both senders was gonna involve removing something.. just not a lot of room back there. But after reading both posts.. I went fitting hunting and found:

Jeff, similar to what you're talking about?

Wondering if that'll be compact enough that I can leave the stock sender on top and put the new oil pressure sender on the 90 since it's pretty compact. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/gr...-04057.jpg 1/8" NPT fitting makes it just a bit less compact, though.

Wonder if any store local to me would have one of these...

^^^^ Thats pretty much what I used, but I just found one at the local hardware store.

It was 14 years ago when I did mine, but I seem to remember the stock OP sender would have hit something if I mounted it pointing straight up, but again my old guy memory is a little foggy.

So finished the pressure side of things up tonight. Tomorrow I'll change the oil and install the oil temp sensor.

Pressure gauge works nice and I *like* having live oil pressure readings. 60psi cold start, 40psi at cruise, ~30psi at idle (950-1000 rpm). I lugged it coming up the driveway when I got home after a test drive and the pressure looked like about ~20psi at 700-800rpm.

I'll throw up a pic of the way I did the two senders tomorrow when I get daylight, again. Nevermind the gaping hole.. I'm probably gonna modify the mounting, later, so the gauge points more toward the driver than it currently does, along with a nice backing plate to which I can add another gauge on either side. I had to clearance the hole to get this two inch gauge to fit. I'll probably end up cutting quite a bit more to make everything fit at a mounted angle.
