I purchased a motorcraft alt,wp, belt from rockauto back in february. within a week I noticed a rubber dust on the hood and on top of my battery. So I cleaned it off and it came back. I figured the belt was breaking in and left it. So Friday i was checking fluids at a gas station and I see a line in my belt. My belt is literly cut in half on about 1/3 of the belt. I inspected all pullies and travel of the belt with no visible rubbing marks. I called Rockauto and I have a new one being sent out, which is under warrenty. The slice follows the center of the belt. Im thinking just a faulty belt that was sitting and maybe dry rotted. My old belt had no problems I replaced it b/c I had a rock get stuck on it and made a dimple. any ideas?

The rock could have damaged a pulley, which is causing abnormal wear on the belt. Take the belt off and rotate all of the pulleys and look for damage.

doubtful since the old belt was on the car when I got it with the rock dimple. I was just trying to be proactive with the new belt. the old belt was installed and removed several times so it wasnt always in the same spot.

FWIW, the new belt I installed gave the same dust arond the bracket and the PS reservior. Its been about 2 months and the dust is slowly going away. The belt is still in perfect shape.
