Anyone know him much fluid I need to add back to the transmission before going for a drive?
I dropped the pan last night, and can't tell how much came out, since it went into my engine oil drain pan. SO far I put in 2 qts, but nothing seems to be registering on the tranny dipstick...

1988 Service manual says "Approximate Refill Capacity" - 10 quarts*.
The fine print: * "Approximate dry capacity, includes cooler and lines. Fluid level indicator should be used to determine actual fluid requirements and fluid specifications Check at normal operating temperature. DO NOT OVERFILL"

I've put in 3.5 so far, and it drives, so.... Maybe I'll call a tranny shop in the morning.

Just keep checking the dipstick and adding fluid until it's full.

I added 4 qts total, and I think I'm in the hash marks now. it ver tough to tell since the clean fluid doesn't show up all that well.

That's about right. If you pull the pan it takes approximately 3.5-4 quarts to fill it to the correct level. What ever you do, make sure you don't overfill it.

What Hawk said!!
Over filling an automatic causes the fluid to "foam" which will cause the trans to slip and take out the clutches. Under filling has the same result.
The fluid will be easer to read after it mixes with the 5 or 6 qts of old fluid left in the Torque converter and cooler lines.
