I was driving the car to go get it registered and saw a bunch of smoke in the rear view.I wasn't running it hard ,just normal driving. When I pulled over it was dripping fluid from the passenger side of the trans. When I was driving home it seemed like it would only make a smoke screen at higher rpm s.( above 2000 or so )I got home and it looks like it is pushing fluid out of the filler tube.I had my son how the brakes and give it some gas,and after about 15 seconds fluid started to gush out, make the biggest smoke cloud ever...and of course BURST into flames..hahaha..not funny, but it is.I then put out the blaze, checked under the hood and nothing got burnt. (thank god) I haven't done anything else with it,I'm just fustrated with it. Fluid was at operating range. So my question is, what would cause it to do this?

The modulator is probably bad .... damaged or cracked diaphram. They are quite easy to replace and don't cost that much.

If its the modulator, its only 20 bucks, and it has 1 bolt. Being 20 years old, id suspect it.

So how does a bad modulator push fluid out of the fill tube??? Can't see that as the problem...

Not sure if it will force the fluid out of the fill tube or not but the vacuum will pull it into the engine causing the white smoke. It happened to me a couple of times. I pulled the tranny vacuum line off of the vacuum manifold and there was quite a bit of tranny fluid in the vacuum line.

The smoke was caused by the trans fluid getting on the hot manifold, not out the exhaust. I guess I'm going to get a modulator and try that first,I just don't know what is going on. I s there some kind of vent that may be plugged? I don't remember if there was one on top of the trans or not.

I don't remember a vent. Maybe, the tranny is being pressurized somehow .... not sure how. Try disconnecting the vacuum line and hold the brake while giving it a bit of gas .... see what happens. Maybe, the modulator acts as a pressure relief valve also .... just a thought.

If the diaphram on the modulator bust it lets fluid thru to the vac line. If its leaking there you need to replace the vacuum line. Normally it will suck trans fluid up into the intake and the car will burn trans fluid causing it to smoke.

there is a vent on top of the case near where the tailshaft housing bolts on. they can become clogged if everything is really dirty. i'm not sure if it would cause the symptoms you have though...
