A rant about a silly newb

There was a guy on facebook complaining that his car only made 92 horsepower on the dyno. All of us asked him if the timing was correct annd his response was, "Yes its at 10*". He also said, "I checked it twice(key word "I") and its dead on". I told him to stop by my house and I would check it out.

Come to find out his cam was advanced two teeth, so that about 5-10*, so I said, "WTF made you think the timing was dead on?!" and then he finally said, "I didnt do it, John(Name changed to protect the innocent) set it for me." Well....I know the guy and HE IS BLIND!! Seriously, he is totally blind and has not had vision since he was 6. The guy is amazing and does incredible work with "NA" hot rods, but you cant set turbo 2.3 timing by ear!!! So I AGAIN, showed this kid how to set his own timing. Got it running , and then I pulled it all apart and made him do it again, two more times! Sure....He called me a d#ck, but I guarantee he wont have to ask anyone-especially a blind guy- to set his timing for him again.

Moral of the story is these newbs need to be honest, if they want a good diagnosis, and if they want to own a 2.3 turbo Ford, they need to learn to work on the dang car themselves!!

UN FRIGGIN BELIEVABLE!!!

Just had to rant Tongue

We were all "Newbie's" once upon a time. We would ask crazy questions repeatedly and wouldn't listen to anyone. Ask your Mom or Dad if they are still with us, they will agree.
The best we can do for a Newbie, is to bring them along and make them part of the NATO family. One of the best things I learned was to
"read" :read: over and over again. I get a kick out a common occurence on Stinger's Forum, where it will say "read this 817 times"! :giggle:

I was encouraged to "search", but not commanded! It worked and I :read: everything in sight. When that doesn't work, I go to Google. You would be surprised what you find Confusedhocked:.
The other day I looked something up on Google to find a modified Mustang ('66 Mustang GT-140). To my surprise, it led me back to the "Message Board", where "B" and I had a coversation about doing it to his Mustang :giggle:.

I know, some of the ridiculous and redundant questions will boggle the mind. If they knew the answer, they would not ask.
Just remember, we are here to help, not be critical.

NATO is for all owners of '83 - '88 Turbo Coupes and Turbo Cougars. Embrace the questions and help them, it will put a smile on their face and yours.

:agreed:

Heck I'm still a newb with these birds, right up my alley for what I've wanted to do but miles away from what I'm used to. All I can do is ask for help when I need it, Help others when I can, and bring up some of my ideas that others may find interesting or cause them to have ideas of their own.

Agreed. When I got my TC in 2000, I had no clue about how it actually worked, as I came from the NA V8 world. LOTS of reading, experimenting (including screwing stuff up), and I finally understood how the whole thing worked.

The only stupid question is the question that isnt asked. But as RDOG pointed out, be honest, and fully explain / describe the problem. No "I KNOW" the problem isnt XX statements.

We all had to learn everything in life at some point, and from someone. When trying to "teach" someone who is new to something, it helps to not be uppity about the passing on of the knowledge, it makes people tend to tune out, and the end result is the knowledge is not passed on, at least through that person anyway.

Also keep in mind alot of people, newbs or not, are mechanically inept when it comes to working on vehicles, and no matter how much knowledge you put into them, they are still never really gonna be very "good" or "efficient" at working on them. I experience this all the time when training newbs at work. I both own and am the GM of a body/mechanic shop here in the QC, and I have to hire, teach, see failure/success in, and then fire/keep people on a weekly basis, so I know this gig well.

No, he didnt dyno. He did do the motrocraft tune up and the wide band. He still hasnt put a scoop on the darn top mount intercooler. I told him I wouldnt answer anymore of his 400 horspower questions until he made an effort to fix exactly what was stated. I'm glad that other guys also jump down his neck about telling lies, and how we couldnt help him unless he gave real facts.

Sometimes news need a V8 forehead slap to wake them up
