A new problem

need help!! my car has been acting up. here is the situation. after driving the car for a while lets say I drive the car for a couple of hours (start and stop the car periodically) after this time when I try and turn the car on it barely stays on and seems like it is starving for fuel and when I hit the gas there is no response. it just idles around 200 to 300 rpms and wants to turn off. I just tuned it up and change the external fuel pump as well as a new IAC about two months ago. *but it will run and idle really good after the car cools down/sits for a while. today, when after trying to start the car it did the same thing starving for fuel (after driving about 20 miles). I pumped the throttle until I was able to get it up to idle but after driving the car for about 10 minutes I came to a stop and the idle basically jumped for a slight second from 1000 rpms down to about 800 rpm and back up. when I gave the car gas it pretty much sputtered. I stoped the car for about 10 minutes and took off again. when I came to a stop the idle jumped up and down starving for fuel and just shut off. I couldn't get the car started after this. I basically let the car cool down and sit for about an hour and it fired right up-idled and drove fine. Can anyone give me some info. as to what seems to be happening?

most likely the TFI module. they get more and more responsive to heat as they get old. this is the grey metal and plastic thing on the distributor. unplug it, remove it using the special star bit tool, and have it tested at your local parts house. if it checks out, replace it anyways, as they are cheap, and hard to get at(might as well). but continue to look for your problem, if it doesnt go away.

Yup, sounds like classic symptoms of the TFI / PIP on the way out. FYI, Ford recommends that both the TFI and PIP be replaced if either one fails.

IMO, removing the TFI and having it tested is basically worthless. When a TFI is failing, it typically doesnt show symptoms until it gets good and hot, but behaves normally if it is cool. Having a cold TFI tested will tell you nothing about how it behaves when it is hot. About the only thing testing the TFI will tell you is if it is totally dead.

i have the same kind of problem, would the TFI and PIP cause me to loose power at higher rpm and boost. The car also jumps when i let off the throttle, and very bad idle, i have a new IAC and TPS comming...im concerned that im putting parts on the car that i dont ness need, i used a digital multimeter on the tps and ran the test on it, ive been told that i need an analog tester to find dead spots!

Look for CM codes 14 (intermittant loss of PIP signal) and/or CM 18 (intermittant loss of IDM signal)
