A Good Time for a Paint Job?

So I was talking with my dad earlier today and I was telling him that I want to paint my new Turbo Coupe sometime within the month, but he was telling me that it wouldn't be a good time to paint the car because even after the car is painted it's better to let the paint set in the body for weeks after, so doing so in the sun and in good weather would be a lot better.

True or False?

I tend to disagree... Leaving the car out in the sun would be ok if it was in the sun constantly. But with night and/or putting it in some kind of shelter, it's going to experience some major temperature changes which has never been good when it comes to painting a car. But I honestly can't be positive... Just my $.02.

Well.. I'm thinking to save myself some money I might just prime the car myself.. I'll prime it black, because that's the color I want my car, so I can drive it around and have it look allright and wait until spring to paint it so I can get the better weather

False, You can paint it anytime. With todays hardened clearcoats, you don't need to let a car set for several days for the paint to dry in. As long as you use the appropriate reducer for the weather and it is not too cold in the shop you paint it in you should have no problems. If it gets too cold in the shop, the paint has a tendency to not dry fast enough and will run on you. So, as long as you have a heated shop, you will be alright. We paint cars year round in the shop. They are dry in 24 hours, we wet sand them and buff them the next day after painting, put them back together and give them back to the customer not matter what the weather is....Tommy

It depends on the type of paint you are going to use - Single Stage or Base Coat/Clear Coat. Either one will be fine in this weather as long as you have a good 2-3 days to paint the car & let it sit. When I painted my 2 birds, I let them sit inside overnight & then left them outside for a few days. I'm assuming that you do not have a garage to keep it in for that period of time, so you should try to plan it when it will be nice. Tommy is right that with todays paints & additives, your finshed job will be harder & more duarable than you can image. The critical period is the first few hours after painting where it is still soft & the solvents are evaporating from the fresh paint. Bugs & leaves in the fall could cause you issues if they land on that fresh paint job. Good Luck.

Well I won't be painting the car myself.. I'll get the car painted at a company that does a good job

2-3 day's sounds pretty reasonable though for paint to sit in.. Especially when you aren't driving it and leaving it inside for that time
