a few probs with my 88

I have read all the faq's and i have done soem troubleshooting. i just wanted to get some more input.
fans, they didnt come on when i bought the car, the relay pack seemed to be the culprit. i replaced it with as spare i ad, at 210 on my infrared thermometer on the water pump, the large fan kicked in. with the a/c on, the large fan kicks in. it still gets too hot and the fan wont come on (259 the other day!). soooo, why doesnt the little fan come on and what would be the intermittent cause for the lare fan to not come on. on this, is there a sep temp sender for the fans and the guage?
also, the car runs nice (auto with 140k) but has some power issues at times above 3k-3.5k rpm, i think its the TPS and am replacing it today, any other ideas?
it makes 10lbs boost, is that right?
i have an LA3 ecu, can i install it without problems?
thanks for any advice.

1. You cant' use an LA3 on an auto trans car. The auto trans EEC controls the 3-4 shift and converter lockup. The LA3 is manual trans computer.

2. Have you pulled the codes. This could shed light on the 3 -3.5K perfomance issue and is always a good idea. There is also a test for the TPS although it doesn't always catch a bad one: http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/idlet...tment.html

3. The small fan doesn't come on until around 220. I suspect you have other issues if I understand what you are saying. I understand you to say that the passenger side (primary) fan is coming on around 210 as it should and that is is not able to keep the car at desired temps. That should not be an issue at this time of the year, unless you are having 80*+ weather. Have you checked coolant level?
Any chance the radiator is plugged? If the small fan didn't come on at all, have you checked to see if it works. Run power direct from the battery just to test the fan motor. I would suspect a motor problem or wiring issue with the secondary, given that you say the primary is working like it should.

The ECT is the sensor that provides the EEC with coolant temp data as far as fan turn on.
A quick test for the fan motors, wiring and relays is to pull the connector off the ECT, jumper the two sides of the connector and start the engine. Both fans should run and that tells you the motors, wiring and both fan relays are OK. There may be corrosion between the connector and the sensor also. If the fans don't operate in normal use like they should then the problem is probably the ECT sensor or the flow of coolant past the sensor. The water passage at the hose on the bottom of the lower intake can become clogged

Send me an email and I'll send you some info on testing the ECT

I did pull the codes, different responses, but at one time or another got code 10 and 35, havent looked up the defs as it slipped my mind! I did put power directly to both fans and they function. where is the ECT, there looks to be a temp sender at the rear drivers side, is it only for the guage? it is a one wire hookup. From your info, looks like the ECT is on the bottom of the intake, i will take a peek for it today.
The main fan is not coming on dependably, when i first swapped relay packs it did, cant say for sure it has since. I am running with the a/c on to keep temps in check right now.
bummer on the la3, i am considering putting in a 5spd.
not that its the current priority, but is 10psi right for stock?

thanks again

Can't say anything for the other problems you're having, but the auto trans cars got 10 PSI [Image: smile.gif]

Is that with the stock gauge? If so, I'd look at it first. I believe mine was 4psi off, now that I think about it.

1986 TC, 132k pretty well taken care of miles. k&n, gillis@17, timing set at 12.5 (spout out), A/C delete. Very restrictive exhaust at the moment [email pics to asimov at forced-induction org for sales/id/showoff purposes (free hosting)]

1. there is no code 10. Codes start at 11 and that one is the "OK" code.

2. not sure about the code 35.

3. The ECT is located inbetween the middle two fuel injectors on the lower intake. The other sensor you were talking about is the temp sender for the gauge only. use the information I posted above to try to diagnosis the fan problems.

the code 10 happened during a KOER test with a snap on MT2500 scanner. It said snap throttle(memory here) code 10, and then proceded to die. I think the base throttle setting is off along with a dirty IAC motor. i am working on it shortly and will updat all tomorrow.
thanks for the help,

Ahhhh.... the "code" 10 is called the dynamic response code, and is just there to tell you to do the brief WOT and exercize the BOO circuit. Itis not really a trouble code, it just tells you to do the WOT, BOO test.

If it dies, base idle is likely set too low. With IAC electrical plug off, and motor warm, use idle adjust screw on the linkage to set base idle to around 800 RPM.
