a few problems

i just got an 87 rc a few weeks ago and its a sweet car!! i have just been having a few problems recently....

1. hooked up a mbc and the car seems like it is overboosting, the stock boost gauge goes all the way up to 18psi... so i just ran with no boost controller and figured the wastegate would open at whatever the stock sprink is set to open at.. well, it still overboosted. it ran fine with trhe stock boost controller, but i wanna run more boost!! everyone wants more boost!!

2. i have an oil leak around the valvecover gasket, i think it may be the valve cover gasket but there are also 3 threaded holes in the head around that area that have no bolts in them. i was thinking that maybe these holes were for some type of mounting brackest for something? i dont know if these holes goo all the way through the head or not, this is the only area that is leaking oil? hmmm

any ideas??

i forgot to add, it pulls really hard until the turbo "maxes out" but once the boost maxes out, it feels like its lagging, maybe this is normal?

The stock IHI turbo on the 87-88 is rather small and starts to run out of steam after 5 - 5.5K. On the good side it offers quick spool and good low and mid range performance.

What kind of MBC did you use? Is it adjustable and did you try adjusting it any? There is a description and diagrams of how to hook up mbc valves here:
http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Gilli...sValve.htm

The Stock WGA is set to open the WG at about 9.5 psi. If you want to use that, run a line direct from the compressor outlet to the WGA port.

It should be easy enough to cleanthe areas in question to verify the oil leak source. If it's the original cork gasket, it is no surprize it's leaking. We recommend using one of the rubber replacement gaskets
Ford make a very good one:
Ford Part# Ranger item, PN F57Z-6584-A

Felpor also makes a similar item, tho some feel itisn't as good. Felpro Part# 50043 R-1
I have had no problems with mine.

You should also check the PCV valve. Bad valves let boost into the crank case and that can cause different seals to leak. The test is to remove the valve, near the distributor. Hold it straight up and down and try to blow through the small end If it passes ANY air at all, replace it with the Ford part ONLY
Ford P/N: E5ZZ-6A666-A (this is the correct p/n, 5/13/02) The Motorcraft box will also have EV-127-A on it

Some Non-Ford pcv are not designed to keep boost out of the crankcase and can cause damage.
