Driving home tonight, got on it pretty hard from a light and now no a/c. Don't know if there's a connection or not here. Anyway, when I put the heater control on a/c, the fan does come on like it should. It also comes on when I jump the low pres. switch so I would think the heater control is good. Why won't the compressor engage? I can spin it by hand, but it won't engage. I know the a/c cuts out when going WOT, but what actually controls that? Any hints and clues greatly appreciated as it's HOT these days. lol.

Definitely not low. I did jump the switch and it still didn't engage.

First thing is to pull electrical connector off comp clutch and hook a test light. Jumper press switch and see if light lights up. If it does, clutch is getting power. If you can put an amp meter in the line to clutch, draw should be roughly 4.5 A or so.
If no power at clutch with press sw jumped, suspect the IRCM or wiring to/from IRCM, as there is a solid state relay in the IRCM that actually powers up clutch.

I was thinking the IRCM also, but the fan comes on when the heater control is in the a/c position. Could the fan coming on and the clutch not engaging still be the IRCM? Separate relays in that thing for the fan and clutch?

Ok, Not the IRCM (checked with know good one) and getting 12v to the connector. I guess the clutch just died? They just die like that?

Power to the clutch and no turn means a bad clutch.

This may be way back in the obvious stage...but my a/c system would blow the pressure fitting off right behind the compressor. That bled off the refrigerant quickly - no pressure - no clutch. It seems logical that taking off from a stop might build pressure fast enough to do just that.
It wouldn't seperate completely, so it wasn't THAT easy to notice. I ended up repairing it with one of those external couplers.

If there was no refrigerant, the compressor would still go on when you jump the low pres. switch. I just ordered a new clutch. Hopefully be here soon. REAL soon. lol.

In your first post the first thing i thought of was your a/c clutch, high rpm and all, guess you've got it figured out, good luck, i know its hot and humid in pa right now.
