You would not believe that a HR980 would *ever* go for this price, but there you have it....

The more I see the prices on eBay, the more I'm tempted to buy another Stang and part out the TC.....NOT! Think I'll just buy another parts car or two and part 'em out on eBay.

Nice experience... just went & read the thread.
I dont know if you have a u-pull it anywhere near you... It really is a lifesaver for these cars. Funny thing about these units, you can never tell exactly how good they are, you can only *hope* they hang in there. I am sure someone has one around (heck I can even get another from the local junkyard, but by the time s/h gets it there... it would pay to find a local yard) Also, since you dont know if one will work, I would personaly hate to send a questionable part. Seems you have already had enough fun with this already.
If you get to a junkyard, take a look around for the lowest mileage 4-cyl mustang or TC.
1st, make sure the system is still intact.
Check the piping & look especially around the o-ring joints and look for the tell-tale oily dusty looking stuff. If that isnt too bad, depress the schrader valve (should be up near the firewall, or on the line leading back to the accumulator) Any system which is still possibly good should have some sort of residual pressure. The yard I go to recovers the R-12, but I have yet to see them completely empty a car (heck sometimes its still fully pressurized)
You can bring the spring lock tool to the yard, but a hacksaw works ok too. Just be certain to cut the lines back an inch or two from the compressor and not get any crap from the cut into the unit. (Before anyone flames me for this, once those lines are open, they pretty much seem to flash rust in a day or two... making them unusable.)
Last but not least- look into the inlet & outlet of the compressor. The metal in there should be nice & shiny, any of the oil that comes out of the unit should be a nice amber. If you see rust, or the oil is black or metalic-sparkly, move on to the next unit.

You think that ebay price was nutz, up here in NY the yard I called wanted $150 with not much of a guarantee. Where would I send my unit to have it rebuilt? I don't know of anyplace up here. Also. what other ford years and models use this same unit? I thought it was only the 87-88 that had this model. Thanks... Chuck

The HR980 is not rebuildable, it is welded together at the factory. About the only service for it is the clutch assembly and/or front seal.
I know the HR980 was used in '86(possibly earlier) till the early '90s on the 2.3 Mustang. Also the 3.8s got it in the Fox chassis Birds/Cougars. They generally use a V belt clutch(as did the '86 2.3), but can be changed over to the serptine if yours is OK. In fact the one I sold had a bad clutch. It went on a 3.8 Bird using the original clutch.

150... uh yeah, they qualify for the nuts category....
That would definetly not be a place to get parts, I would guess that there are no u-pull it places around ?
Another option is a request on junkyarddog.com, I have had pretty good luck, but all of the forementioned warnings apply. Some, but not all will give some sort of warrenty.
