Hi! I bought a 1988 Turbo Coupe and it ran good untill one day it just lost all power! The car started fine went down my drive way stopped and went to leave and it was like the motor had no power it was still running but running rough you know like bad gas so I tryed to rev the rpms up but it really wouldnt go past 1500. After about 3-4 of the car running rough stalling and starting back up the car will not start any more. Now I can spry starting fluid in the air filter and she starts but will die if I dont keep giving it a shot of starting fluid.
I'm new to all of the so I bought a scaner and this is what can up.

41 exhaust gas oxygen sensor voltage signal always lean low value does not switch

42 exhaust gas oxygen sensor voltage signal always rich high value does not switch

63 throttle position sensor signal voltage too low

65 electrical charging system problem occurred voltage to high over 17.5 volts or
engine control system never went into closed loop fuel operation or
transaxle problem- overdrive cancel switch was not cycled during engine run self test

72 insufficent manafold vacuum change detected during dynamic response portion of engine run delf test or problem with message center control assembly- failure in data communications link or
power interrupt detected

I have 1.02 volts on the TPS and 12.09 volts on my batt.

These codes came with the scanner I got(code book). So where should I start to trouble shoot?
Thanks for all of your help This board rocks.
YEAH!!

do you have fuel pressure?

If you got fuel pressure then check cam timing.

Also check all the big hoses are properly located and clamped. Don't overlook the one form the VAM to the compressor inlet

i would say change the o2? do you know if it is new/old?

and tps should be .94, but i dont know if 1.02 is a big difference. (pete?)

check your vacuum at warm idle.

If you are seeing any fouling of the spark plugs..as in being fuel soaked. The VAM could be your problem. If the car is not registering enough air through the VAM..the fuel/air mixture is going to kill it , stall it ..and or make it nearly impossible to start.

If everything else is proven to be operative...try un-plugging the VAM , attempt to start it. If it starts but idles like crap...a bad VAM may be your problem?

Rebuilt VAM's can be bought from NAPA for $119.00 plus shipping costs...they also have a $36.00 refundable core charge.

I have just gone through this whole enchilada within the last two weeks.

The Code 42 with a good 02 Sensor installed can be an indication of this problem.

Your code book is wrong.... there are several codes unique to the 2.3T. For example, CM 72 is power interrupted to PCM when it wasnt expecting it. This code was discussed at length a few years ago... do a search.

TPS base voltage over 1.0 V will cause problems, like hanging high idle, possible rich / lean codes. As noted above, bad VAM can cause idle problems, and rich / lean codes.

It looks like it could be the VAM Plesase look at video .Tommorow I will see if it has the right volts and alao adjust the TPS to .96 volts
I hope I can adjust it cause to replace it it will cost 119.00 w/ 50.00 core.
Thank you

Craig, 5.0TurboCoupe1988 is on to something. I had the exact same symptoms and it turned out to be the fuel pump.

Craig,

Has the factory seal on your VAM's top cover been broken?

My VAM had been toyed with by the previous owner..and he neglected to re-seal it afterwards.

My VAM's internals were corroded , rusted and basically shorted out and shot to hell.

I hope for the sake of cost and time...yours turns out to be something else , other than the VAM or a fuel pump.

The fact the the car runs with the VAM un-plugged as I suggested trying is somewhat telling , but possibly not the end all answer.

I also had to replace a brand new Motorcraft TPS that was bad from stock. The internal return spring was bad.
