Hi all, I am finally getting my new to me 1988 TC with 52100 original miles. I had to have it delivered due to not having time to go get it until mid to late December and I couldn't wait that long. Anyway, it will be here tomorrow and before I drive it I need to know what all I should do to it to make sure it is road worthy. I plan to change the normal things such as oil, coolant, belts and hoses. Should I change the timing belt or will it be ok? Remember that all the stuff, other than fluids, is 24 years old. I plan to change out the cam to a roller and replace the fuel pump to a higher volume at some point just not sure when. My plans for this car is to up the boost a little and enjoy driving her, I am not making it a race car.

Thanks
Scott

Timing belt change interval is 60K. If you think it's original, you might want to change it. be sure to post some pics inquiring minds want to know!!

Congratulations on your new TC. Be sure to check the power steering and brake fluid also. If dark, change/bleed as needed. Like Pete says, please post some good photos when you can.

Mt Congratulations as well -

Enjoy your car !!!

TERRIFIC bunch of Good Folks here with super Advice, Experience and insight !!

Helped my son and save lots of time , money and effort in putting our TC back on the road

Plus we have scored a First and Second Place at local T-Bird show two years running !

Timing Belt - Perspective

I am the Original owner of my 88 TC - Just turned 32,985 Original Miles - Today Nov 21 in fact.

Car was stored for close to 15 years .

My son and I put it back on the road last year

We inspected the timing belt and it looked Good -

Which is the Exact Reason that we replaced it ASAP

It was 20+ years Old - Reason enough, in my opinion.

Low mileage or not

I finally got her home and took it out for a spin. The clutch is going to have to be adjusted if possible, it catches to high for me. She ran good but I did run into an issue after I filled up the tank. Before the fill up she was idleing at 1000 rpm and after the fill up she now idles at 1800-2000 rpm. I noticed after I let is set for about 15 minutes I heard a gurgle sound from the fuel tank and then she idles at 1000 again. She then jumped back up as soon as I touched the gas pedal. Any ideas? She ran great fo about 10 miles and only started this after the fill up. I used 100% 93 octane gas.

Thanks

there is no adj for the clutch really. just if it gets low. pull up on the back side of the pedal and it will adj. it has a ratchet sys.

as for the idle going high, probably need to clean the IAC. it might be sticking.

might want to check the TPS adjustment. most say to set it to .94. ive found over the years that .84 works better on the birds. this seems to stop the 1800-2000 idle from happening.

Hi all, I have worked all day yesterday after dinner and all day today and I have completed the following. I have changed the fuel filter,Trans fluid, oil and filter, timing belt, thermostat, valve cover gasket, plugs, plug wires, rotor and cap, belts, hoses, coolant, o2 Sensor and power steering fluid. I am going to take it to a brake shop next week and have the system flushed and bled, I don't want to mess up the anti-lock system. I am also going to change the rear end fluid as well, hopefully tomorrow. Can anyone think of anything else that I should do to make this a semi daily driver?

As for the clutch pedal issue, the pedal catches to high and the clutch is fully released at half pedal. I need to get the pedal lower, any suggestions?

I also found the Gillis turbo thing but I know nothing about it. I did notice that it is screwed all the way in, is this correct? Any help on this would be good.

Thanks
Scott

How high is the car boosting? IIRC the Gillis instructions state to start with four threads showing and adjust from there. If it's all the way in and you're getting a "normal" amount of boost, something might be out of whack. By normal, I mean anywhere between 14 and 18 lbs.
