87 vs 88 transmission

I am still trying to get my transmission rebuilt. I have an 88 with the A4LD. Is there any difference between the trans for that year and the one that was in the 1987 model. My trans filter matches that of and 87 not an 88. The ford tech. rebuilding it said that there might be a problem installing the different year trans???????

Zeke:

If people don't know, they generally don't reply. I'm certain that if you spent some time on Google or another search engine you could probably find the answer. Have you tried your local Ford dealer?

I'm certainly no expert but I would suspect that the two years transmissions would be completely interchangeable - but that's a guess.

Good luck. Let us know what you discover, that way it'll be in the archives next time someone asks.

Zeke, I don't know much about the A4LD. I never heard of any differences but I just don't know

Believe me when I say I meant no disrespect to anyone on here...I'm just so use to seeing a reply for every topic. When the transmission started to have the problem I replaced the filter. i went to autozone for the filter kit for an 88 and brought it back and nothing matched up. I went back and they typed in the numbers for an 87 trans and it was the one that i needed???

Didn't figure you were disrespecting anyone, just had a bad case of "I want my car fixed!" Big Grin BTDT Big Grin

From what you say I guess my "guess" was wrong!

Again please let us know how it comes out.

Ok....I just talked to my rebuilder. If I can understand this correctly, and I know NOTHING about the workings of a trans. There WERE 2 solenoids in this unit. It looks like one was plugged up? He said that it should work properly though because The system works on hydraulics? The main concern was the shifting between 3 and 4? But, all should be ok. At least that what he is telling me????

Sorry I didn't see this until now! I seem to remember there being 2 different filters at Napa but I didn't question it as I brought mine with me. I suspect that since my car was built June 18 1988 it was of the short last run that had some minor differences so who knows if Ford decided to change up the A4LD configuration considering it's shortcomings and continued use beyond 88. Shortly after changing the fluid (but not the torque converter) it started falling out of gear at stoplights so I put a 5 speed in about 4 years ago.

I'm not sure what you mean by plugged up. Hydraulic, yes that's what auto's are. There are bands that stop the outside of the gear causing the inside to spin instead. I don't know much about them myself; never seen one opened up let alone describe it at all but www.howstuffworks.com has a good description if the general operation with pictures.
