In NC it has to be 35 years old for collector car status. At that age we can run a plate the year of the car and do not have inspections.

We have to be careful with these terms. For example, we have three special plates here in PA.

Antique - 20 years or older, must have modern lights to be operated at night.

Classic - 15 years or older.

Collector - Must be modified. You actually have to submit 4 pictures of the exterior, as well as one of the engine and one of the exahust. This plate here was really set up for the "pro street" type guys.

All of these say "weekend use" with "daily driving" limited to 1 day a week or less. All of these re permanant plates with no emmisions requirement, however they must pass an annual safety inspection.

In other states, they have terms like "historic" classic, etc that mean different things, and have different requirements.

Bob makes a good point...

In VA we only have one type of older vehicle registration and that is "Antique", which limits the amount of milage and type of driving(no driving to work etc).

Vehicles over 25 years old can be registered as such, and its like Jeff K says, it could be nuclear powered(Although the NRC may have something to say about it) [Image: smile.gif]

We do have the option of three different plates, all have the same limitations.

First is a black/white tag that looks like it belongs on a Model T(been available since before I can remember, and I'm right up there with Pete D).

Second, available since '99 is this modern but hideous yellow/blue thing that just says Antique(and Virginia).

Third we can register year of mfg plate, which is what I have on my '69 Cobra Jet Fairlane.
