The 86's had a T3 while the 87-88's had an IHI. The IHI is a smaller turbo which won't handled as much boost (15-18lbs) or provide as much HP, however it spools up quicker so the lag time for the boost to kick in is less.

The T3 can be boosted up to 20-22lbs and provides more power but spools up quicker.

IMHO, the T3 is a good upgrade and will bolt right up.

The T-3 will bolt right up.
The T-3 requires a different oil return line
than the IHI. You will have to do a little work hooking up the coolant supply and return circuit but that isn't too hard to fab with parts from a well supplied hardware store. You also need to take the compressor inlet from your IHI and put it on the T-3 for the extra vacuum ports. The inlets interchange with no modification.
