dont quote me on this but I THINK you can simply swap the hoods and call it a day, I have seen a couple of 4 eye cars with 87-88 hoods around here

------------------
88 turbo coupe, 5 speed, stock Big Grin with a gillis valve and 3 inch downpipe and exhaust, ported exhaust side on the head, fresh bearings and rings, fresh head, mustang roller cam, .60/.63 T3 and now someone needs to give me a header

4 other vehicles, all fords and all unique
89 TTA (yes the turbo one)
65 Mustang Fastback 2+2
98 GT
99 Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins on 35's

The 87 hood will swap on to the 86.
Not sure on the front end part.

Any intercooler is better than none, but the stock one in th estock location isn't great compared to mounting something in a cooler location

The front clip will work. The body line is a little off. As far as the hp between the the 85'-86' and 87'-88', the 85'-86' no intercooler, smaller vam, and the boost is set lower do to not having an intercooler. The 87'-88' have the intercooler, bigger vam(like the Mustang SVO),and the boost is set higher. The 87'-88' also have better computers and it is geared better.

The '87-'88 hood will bolt right on. Might as well use the '87-'88 hood hinges while you are at it so you can get rid of the prop rod. You will need the rubber seals that go around the '87-'88 hinges also as they are different.

If you do install an '87-'88 intercooler on your '86, you will need to get an '87-'88 valve cover, and intake manifold to lower the intercooler slightly otherwise it will sit to high and you will not be able to close the hood. Personally, considering the trouble to install an '87-'88 intercooler, I would just install a custom front mount. You will be better off in the long run.

You do not need to install the 87-88 valve cover and intake to put an IC on an 85-86.
I installed an IC on an 85, all I had to do was to remove the the gasket on the air duct on the hood......perfect fit !

turbobird63,

That's interesting. In my '85 and in another persons that I have spoken w/, we both had fit issues even w/ no ductwork at all when installed.

It also hits the hood w/ the intercooler installed on my '85 w/ the stock non-scooped hood during engine roll, although I can close the hood. Who knows. YMMV.

Hey Mr T, I dont know why mine works but it does. The lower corner of the IC does touch the duct and it does rub a little but I have been running it that way daily for over a year with no trouble. The hood also is aligned pretty good, though I did have some trouble at first. I uploaded a couple pics. Possibly this car was hit sometime before I got it but I dont know if that made any differance ??????

well fellas i decided against the stock 87-88 intercooler location i thinking the intercooler would get a lot of heat soak at that location went to the junk yard found a 1988 mazda 626 turbo and got the intercooler of of that the intercooler had a bracket atached with a oil cooler on it so i got the hold thing for 13 bucks. lucky huh dont ford owns mazada ? still may get hood for cooling of the engine may give the sleeper image away thou.
