86 TC not running right

The 86 TC I bought had a blown head gasket. After I fixed that (used a Detroit gasket), I got it back running and it still had a miss at idle and most noticeable when you hold RPMs up somewhere, every few seconds you hear a tiny miss. The plugs/O2 sensor was replaced about 50 miles before I replaced the head gasket (I was driving around with a blown head gasket). I used NGK plugs at .032. The wires/cap/rotor/TFI are unknown whether they been replaced recently.

When I got it running I of course drove it light for 2 days, then retorque the head studs down. Then after that I let it all out and drove it like I stole it. I'm boosting about 18 psi, 10 degrees timing, fuel pressure unknown (it is blowing black smoke between shifts according to my friend). I drove it hard with a couple burnouts/getting sideways/launches for 2 days. I parked it for the night yesterday and when I woke up this morning, the driveway was full of oil stains (but they were everywhere!). They were coming from under the tranny, oil pan, next to the wheels, everywhere under the engine. Under the hood there is oil on the bottom of the hood above the dipstick, OIl on the firewall, intakes, booster, basically everywhere on the driver's side. The dipstick was also not clicked into the dipstick tube (I don't know if I left it out or if it blew out). I cannot see any noticeable leaks anywhere! The dipstick tube is in the block right I think, THe pushed it down as far as it could go and the bracket lined up with where it screws into. I took off the PCV valve and couldn't blow through it. Who knows whats wrong now...

Another problem is that this car doesn't even feel that fast for what it is. I mean it has all the right parts, but its just not working together. I don't know if it has to do with the missing problem, oil leak problem, but its just not running how I think it should. One problem I did notice, and so did motormenace (I let him drive it) is that it has WAY too much gear and it hits redline too fast. I mean I get all my boost, then I already have to shift, it sucks. Here's what this car has, lemme know what you think:

86 TC, everything under 2k miles, rebuilt shortblock TRW pistons, new rings/bearings/seals, stock crank .010 under, stock rods, bored .030 over, modern perf. head big valves/o-ringed/ported, arp studs, modern perf cam, .520 lift roller, T3/T04E 54 trim, ported E6, ported upper/lower int, stock TB, 88 TC IC, 88 hood, cone filter, big VAM, BOSCH BPV, homemade valve cover breather (brass fitting with small filter stuffed into it, hose runs from brass fitting to a port on my intake) theres a piece of 3" metal between VAM and turbo with 2 ports, one for BPV, one for valve cover breather, 3" DP, 3" back, MAC muffler, 35# injectors, BBK 255 pump, kirban adj reg, 85.5 SVO PE computer, 86 TC harness, A/C removed, mustang 8.8 rear rebuilt traction lok, 4.56 gears, nonworld class T5, SPEC stage I clutch, driveshaft with bad u joints (vibrates BADLY).

For what this has, it feels as fast as my 88 TC, and you can tell by my sig. what that has. Me and motormenace think that one of the reason it might not be that fast is because of the rear gears... Other than that, I don't know what the miss is about, and I don't know what this oil leak problem is. Any help ?

Do the blow test on the PCV valve and check the dip stick tube seating in the block

Pull the codes (antifreese may have fubared the 02)

Run the fuel pressure diagnostics re the black smoke.

What brand of plug wires are on it?

Be glad it didn't come with Modern Performance Mass Air [Image: biggrin.gif]

Well it has Motorcraft wires.

I'll do the other stuff tomorrow.

Another thing that has been brought to my attention. I took the vac line off of the BOSCH BPV, when I put it back on the BPV, I could hear the valve inside the BPV steady tapping like it was opening and closing, it was going almost as fast as a valve tap would go. I didn't quite understand why...it does have a . 520 lift cam in it, but to close the valve, it needs to see positive pressure, right? Under idle, there is no positive pressure...at least I thought... I mean even with this nasty cam, it still shouldn't ever see NO vacuum.

First, how old are your plug wires ?

The BPV will always be open at idle as it is seeing vacuum then...yes.

Your BPV should not "flutter" open and closed...it sounds like the diaphram in your BPV is torn (?)...

When the HG blew, were you blowing antifreeze out the exhaust? As Pete mentioned, that can damage a 02 sensor quickly.

The BPV requies some degree of vacuum to open it. It does not require positive pressure to close it, just less vacuum

I did a tune up with motorcraft plug wires, cap and rotor and pcv valve. I took the PCV out of the box and did the blow through test and it let pressure through, what the hell? I didn't use it, I'm gonna take it back tomorrow. I left the original one in, which doesn't let pressure through. I took it out again today. And when I got home after tearing it up some more, the dip stick was blown out of the tube again and there was oil EVERYWHERE again. I've yet to do a compression check on it... I'm almost sure it is getting too much pressure in the crankcase, and its blowing the oil out of the dipstick... Its a damn rebuilt engine too, like 2k miles on it or so...So it kinda sucks if it has bad valve seals or rings... Is there any other thing that would cause too much crankcase pressure?

The new PCV valve may not be the right one. Parts guys tend to think V8 or V6 unless you beat them over the head with "4 cyl Turbo"

There are only two types of pressure at work here, boost and compression pressure. If your sure the PCV is good, then it's got to be rings or valve guide/ valve stem/ valve seals. Check to make sure your breather cap (on the valve cover) and the tube from it down to the inlet are open.

Well, I guess theyre open. The breather isn't really even a breather, the guy kinda made up his own (its a brass barb fitting with a piece of valve cover filter stuffed in it, it looks crappy. The hose is homemade attached to my intake pipe. I'm pretty sure its working... One new thing I did notice is that the BPV is on the wrong way...the outlet is going to the IC, and inlet going to the intake... What problems would that cause?
