The 86 TC I bought had a blown head gasket. After I fixed that (used a Detroit gasket), I got it back running and it still had a miss at idle and most noticeable when you hold RPMs up somewhere, every few seconds you hear a tiny miss. The plugs/O2 sensor was replaced about 50 miles before I replaced the head gasket (I was driving around with a blown head gasket). I used NGK plugs at .032. The wires/cap/rotor/TFI are unknown whether they been replaced recently.
When I got it running I of course drove it light for 2 days, then retorque the head studs down. Then after that I let it all out and drove it like I stole it. I'm boosting about 18 psi, 10 degrees timing, fuel pressure unknown (it is blowing black smoke between shifts according to my friend). I drove it hard with a couple burnouts/getting sideways/launches for 2 days. I parked it for the night yesterday and when I woke up this morning, the driveway was full of oil stains (but they were everywhere!). They were coming from under the tranny, oil pan, next to the wheels, everywhere under the engine. Under the hood there is oil on the bottom of the hood above the dipstick, OIl on the firewall, intakes, booster, basically everywhere on the driver's side. The dipstick was also not clicked into the dipstick tube (I don't know if I left it out or if it blew out). I cannot see any noticeable leaks anywhere! The dipstick tube is in the block right I think, THe pushed it down as far as it could go and the bracket lined up with where it screws into. I took off the PCV valve and couldn't blow through it. Who knows whats wrong now...
Another problem is that this car doesn't even feel that fast for what it is. I mean it has all the right parts, but its just not working together. I don't know if it has to do with the missing problem, oil leak problem, but its just not running how I think it should. One problem I did notice, and so did motormenace (I let him drive it) is that it has WAY too much gear and it hits redline too fast. I mean I get all my boost, then I already have to shift, it sucks. Here's what this car has, lemme know what you think:
86 TC, everything under 2k miles, rebuilt shortblock TRW pistons, new rings/bearings/seals, stock crank .010 under, stock rods, bored .030 over, modern perf. head big valves/o-ringed/ported, arp studs, modern perf cam, .520 lift roller, T3/T04E 54 trim, ported E6, ported upper/lower int, stock TB, 88 TC IC, 88 hood, cone filter, big VAM, BOSCH BPV, homemade valve cover breather (brass fitting with small filter stuffed into it, hose runs from brass fitting to a port on my intake) theres a piece of 3" metal between VAM and turbo with 2 ports, one for BPV, one for valve cover breather, 3" DP, 3" back, MAC muffler, 35# injectors, BBK 255 pump, kirban adj reg, 85.5 SVO PE computer, 86 TC harness, A/C removed, mustang 8.8 rear rebuilt traction lok, 4.56 gears, nonworld class T5, SPEC stage I clutch, driveshaft with bad u joints (vibrates BADLY).
For what this has, it feels as fast as my 88 TC, and you can tell by my sig. what that has. Me and motormenace think that one of the reason it might not be that fast is because of the rear gears... Other than that, I don't know what the miss is about, and I don't know what this oil leak problem is. Any help ?
