did we ever settle the debate with the water lines on a t3. are they necessary for a street car, 20 psi, 87 88 tc, with an unmodified 86 T3?

and whats this about clocking the inlet? if it fits in the 86 shouldnt it fit in the 87??? the vam is in the same place right? what am i missing?

can you set up a gillis the same way as an ihi on a T3? or will there be different places fo everything?

finally, my T3 has considerable shaft play, not enough to touch the inside of the housing, but almost. is this useable as is, or is a rebuild in order?

please help.

It's like Ford vs Chevy and "the best cam", it will never be settled. Don't let that stop you.

It's clocking the compressor OUTLET so it aligns with the bottom connection on the intercooler.

What's different? It's prettty much the same http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Gilli...sValve.htm

End play shouuld be imperceptible. Side play should be almost imperceptible. Sounds like it ought to be rebuilt or you will be yanking it again soon. Seal(s) could?? already be bad.

It my opinion that its not needed. The early cars came without it, but Ford replaced a ton of turbos under warranty so it was added. As long as you let the car idle a little while after a hard run, its probably okay.

It would be fine as is, if you were going to use the outlet pipe on the T3 cars and do away with your intercooler. If you want an intercooler, the outlet it pointing WAY to far in for it to work. You IHI inlet will bolt on, and hook up to the VAM just fine.

Same deal, although you WILL need to adjust it. I had my Hallman valve set at 17 psi with an IHI, when I put the T3 back on, it boosted to 25 psi. (and I dont fully know why)

If the side to side play is small enough it doesent hit the housing, it is "probably" okay. When there is oil and oil pressure on it, the play will be reduced considerably. Try adding a few drops of oil to the inlet, and spinning the turbo, it should tighten right up. If it has any in and out play, I wouldnt bolt it on (again, more experience).

Over-all, these seem to be a crap shoot. I had what was known to be a good turbo, that simply sat for a while, and it smoked like crazy, put on another that had more play, and just went 13.20's with it [Image: biggrin.gif]

Hope this helps [Image: biggrin.gif]

Bob, One of the thing this turbo rebuilder guy told me is that from sitting for long periods, the oil film evaporates and then the carbon seal and whatever it is that rides on it sort of "bond". When the turbo is next turned, the carbon bearing supposedly gets fractures on a micro level. If this happens often enough........??

Different size wastegate accutaors. The T3's has alot more volume then the IHI, so it takes longer to fool, hence the higher boost. Now you fully know, and knowing is half the battle [Image: biggrin.gif]

Just out of curiousity, why wouldn't you want water coolant lines on any turbo?

Simplicity. When swapping from an IHI to a T3, the coolant lines are different, so you need to fab them up. Its not hard to do, but the benefits are questionable for the effort. Most performance turbo's dont even have an option for water cooling.

It cost me $7.35 worth of hardware store fittings to make my new water lines and maybe 45 minutes to install.

About what I spent. The water cooling may be of questionable worth, but it sure cant hurt, and for the time and $$ I spent, I think it was worth while.
