You want to unplug the amp. I forgot to do that when I installed my cd player into my 88 and when I turned to power on to try it out the deck was trying to sink the current from the amp or something and got hot enough to burn me when I touched it... That was only momentarly and didn't seem to cause any damage cause it's still working fine a year later.

My 88 had the eq, I'm not sure how simalar the systems are. I know the wireing harness adapter I bought with my deck had two connectors, one was for the speakers and the other for power etc.

I ended up having to take out the glove box and trace the wire bundle back to find the connector that goes directly to the speakers taped up to the bundle. If your hands are more flexible then mine you might not have to remove the glove box.

Basically, check to see if you've found all the connectors.

There is a harness (Crutchfield) you can get that runs back to the amp and connects to the unplugged amp connection, then runs back up to the head unit. They also make a low level line input adapter that lets you use the stock amp if desired. I did use the input adapter since I also have the EQ and I wanted to still use that.

The speakers are connected through the amp wiring so that is the 'plug and play' method in contrast to cutting as splicing.

Other options are to run your own speaker wiring (good upgrade) and replace the speakers while at it Wink

6 speakers, no eq is still Premium Sound. I can't tell for sure from your info how you hooked to the wiring, but there should have been one of the L shaped 8 pin radio connectors in the right rear of the center console that connects directly to the speakers (it's not connected with the stock PS radio). I used the Crutchfield adaptor to connect to that plug, then unplugged the speaker out connector on the amp in the trunk. Works perfectly.
