86 Alternator Wiring

I am looking for the wiring schematic of the charging circuit. I have a broken wire and I don't know where it goes. The wire is attached to the alternator and is the farthest wire on the left (driver's) side. I believe the wire to be orange/black but that is from memory. As far as I know the alternator is the original one.

If there is a schematic out there someone could point me to, I would appreciate it.

Can you take a digital picture and add it to the post?

You'll have three wires coming from the alt.

Black= ground
Red= power
orange/black= goes to the voltage regulator

I don't remember all the factory wiring colors for the voltage regulator but the three that lead from that are

1. 12v acc.
2. goes to the wiring junction under the battery to adjust amps
3. is the orange/black wire that connects to the voltage regulator

mine sniped one day and you'll tell because your amp gauge should stop working, I remember that day so well Big Grin

It was cold to the point were my lighter wouldn't work so I bought a blow torch and was lucky I didn't incenerate the wire :eek:

here is the correct wiring schematic for a 1G alternator.....you'll have to figure out what color wires you have that correspond to the diagram.

Strange my wiring factory never used the field nor the ground, the alt. is connected to the engine thus not needing a ground. My ground wire to my old OEM alt. harness just ended at the plug, nor have I ever seen a Gen1 alt. in a Tbird use or have the wiring for the field.

If someone could help me with the purpose of the field wire :confused:

the field wire excites the magnetic field and tells the alternator to begin charging.

it is internally contained in 2G and 3G alternators.

Thanks for the diagram. It looks like my Stator wire is the one that is broken. Shouldn't take long to fix that problem.

Also, here is the pic of the back of the alternator. http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/0000...rnator.JPG

I looked at my Voltage regulator and the wiring harness connected to it. The connection only has three openings and they are already used. So I am still confused about where this stator wire connects to.

If anyone has an 86 and could take a look, I would appreciate it.

everything on the diagram 5.0TurboCoupe1988 showed you is correct but your TC doesn't use the field wiring, thats what I was talking about earlier because my old 85TC alt. ran off of 3 wires like yours.

Really all your alt. needs to run is the power and the stator, your alt. is already grounded to the engine.

If you look at the back of your alt. there will be a post with an S on it, you'll connect that to the voltage regulator terminal marked S.
