'85 Motor Mount

Ok, so Pete was right... '85 mounts are oddballs.

Everywhere I go, either lists the wrong mount (flat w/ 4 holes, 1 stud) or they list NA or NYA.

The mount looks like a 87/88 mount but smaller. Is it in fact an 87 mount, or something all together different? Any one have a pic of one out of a car? It is really hard to get a good look at it in the car.

You might save some time, energy and $$$ by contacting Chuck Warren about changing your motor mounts. His email address is: [email protected].

Hope this simplifies your headache.

What do you mean by "changing" my motor mounts?

Is there a reason that I can't get the '85 mounts?

It appeared that you were having trouble finding the '85 mounts and I offered a solution.

With all this;

"('87 TC... K&N ~ 255lph ~ Stinger 3"->2.5" w/ FM 40 series~ Cat test pipe ~ .50/.68 StageIII T04E @ 18PSI ~ Tripminder ~
On the shelf: FMIC ~ Knife Edged lower ~ 3.73s ~ adj. cam pulley)"

I'd consider Chucks mounts over the stock units, to handle the additional torque and power output.
Merely a suggestion.

The problem is not so much finding the mounts yet. It is identifying what the right mount is. I plan to keep the '85 mostly stock (one you quoted is the '87), so going to solid, or performance mounts really isnt a good invesment at this point.

My first goal is to find the part/part # number for the correct mounts. If I find that I cannot get them, once I know what to look for, then aftermarket mounts may be a good choice...

Do a search on "motor mounts" and the username "Walsted"

I was doing that yesterday and found some info, then I dropped the keyboard and it closed the browser :mad:

iirc the difference is the size of the stud on the top part of the mount. if you enlarge the opening you can use the 87-88 mount with no problem.

Ok... so after hours of reading, this is the best I can come up with, but I also read other posts that were in conflict... Guess I'll buy a 87/88 unsulator, and try it out....
=================================================
Q: Are the 83-86 style motor mounts interchangeable with the 87-88 style motor mounts?

A: The mounts from each year-set can easily be made to work on the other, but they are not exact replacements. The insulator portion of the 87-88 mounts are bigger, and thus appear to be less likely to fail. Unfortunately, the guide pins on the insulator on the 87-88 mounts are closer to the bolt than on the 83-86 mounts, so the insulators cannot be swapped without drilling a hole in the position of guide pin. The frame attachment points are the same, however, so the insulators can be interchanged if you are willing to drill the hole.

the 83-84 are different than the 85-86 or the 87-88 and have shocks like the svos have.

Careful everyone. The '85 and '86 are definitely different. The portion of the crossmember that the mounts bolt too are different as well. I know this because I have both '85 and '86 TC's.

You can use '87-'88 mounts in an '86 car, but you can't use them in an '85. It's the crossmember that causes the issues. This sucks too, because the '87-'88 design is superior to the '85 design. The mounts are larger, more durable and provide better isolation than the '85 design.

Frankly, you will have a tough time finding the '85 mounts. Six years ago I struggled to find a set and I finally found a low mileage clean used set. Original Ford ones were obsoleted long ago, and unless something changed, aftermarket parts are not avaialable to my knowledge. Your best bet may be the Chuck Mounts (which are a well made more performance oriented part). If needed I took pictures of all this stuff a while ago.
