Hey all, tried searching and either came up with nothing or was completely overwhelmed. What is the diff between the auto and manual turbo's on 85-86 TC's ?
I have an 88 5-spd and have a line on an 86 turbo for upgrade but it is out of an auto car.
Thanks much

The only real difference is that automatic turbos have a .48 wheel on the exhaust side. This allows the turbo to spool up qwicker but it has less topend. Stardard turbos have a .53? wheel on the exhaust side. This requires a few hundred rpm more to spool but will carry you through the entire RPM range.

Thanks much, I was more concerned with a difference in the wastegate or actuator allowing less boost on an automatic turbo but I think that is controlled by the BCS.

85/86 didn't have BCS's; only 87/88 had those.

Ok thanks, but this is adding to my confusion now. If 85-86 had no BCS am I to assume the wastegate limits boost to 10psi ?
I have a brand new turbo, but it is for an 85-86 with an automatic, when I put this on my 88 will I be able to increase boost to 18psi using a Gillis valve ? How much difference, topend, is there between the .48 I have and the .63 ?
Thanks.

Thanks Pete, you are an encyclopedia of knowledge. Any enlightenment on the .48 vs .63 controversy ?
