I'm thinking of purchasing an 84 TC. One of the first projects, after shocks/struts/dampeners, would be to do something about that fugly instrument cluster. The tach in the car is currently non-functional. This car has a 5.0 in it now, and that tach apparently doesn't have a switch to adjust for # of engine cylinders.
There are voltage, oil pressure, and coolant temp gauges over on the right side of the dash, so really all I'd need is a tach.
So, would a cluster from an 85 or 86 work without major surgery? Can that whole section be replaced like that? I'd have some redundant gauges, but that's ok. I could convert one temp gauge to an oil temp gauge.
If I can't swap in an instrument cluster from a later bird, can a swap an aftermarket tach into that space if I dremel out the current one? Remember on the 84's the speedo and tach aren't really seperate gauges, they're just printed onto the same backface with the needles coming through.
Or, is there some way to make that tach work with the 5.0? This is a carbureted engine, no EFI. A later project would be to put an EEC-IV back into it. After a rebuild. Jeez, I should just light my wallet on fire, shouldn't I [Image: smile.gif]
Any ideas?
