Starting this project tommorrow.

1983 2wd Ranger.
2.3L, 5Speed
Bad cam, smokes, carone barrel carb thats junk
cost $75

Bought a 79 2.3L Turbo from a 5 speed mustang
Missing exhuast manifold, croos over pipe and down pipe
Otherways complete.
Cost $60

Got a couple questions before I start. I can get my cross over pipe and downpipe from autozone, and splice in infront fo the cat 9 to keep legal) Will my exhuast manifold work, or is the turbo one differant. ( 79 stang turbo mount sin intake, not exhuast manifold) Also, ALL of the vaccum lines are either dry rotted, missing, or CUT... I need to figure out which ones I actualy need, and which I can plug off. Innercooler???? does this eninge require one, its got a factory oil cooler, at the filter... and Im not big in the turbo world so I have NO idea whats going on. There is also a round object with a rod, that runs off of vaccum, it opens a flat in the turbo. Small line is hooked up, but there is a bigger 3/8? line thats cut, where does it go? Any picstures or scamatics appreciated.

Good luck with your project. Id I remember right there was 14 -16 vacuum lines connected to the air cleaner alone on a 79 turbo. I never did figure out what they were all for. And then there were all the others. You might want to talk to the people at thois board as I think one or two of them are playing with 79 motors. We are more into Turbo Coupes here, made from 83 to 88.

Nope.....have to make your own.

Any 2.3NA mainfold or header will work for you since you need to make the crossover pipe anyway.

Intercooler...nope...not on a stock draw-through set-up..no place to put it ...unless you plan on somehow wedging it between the carb and the intake.

Pay a visit to turboford.org as mentioned and do a search for "carb-turbo" or "draw-through"...

The project is moving along rather nicely, with only a few problems cuase by my efforts. Got the engine bolted in and all wired up today, All thats left to do is, Repalce the actulator I broke, replace the plastic bladed fan I broke, or doaway with it and go electric. Replace the EGR tube, I broke ( it rubbed ont he steering shaft I tried to bend it) or just plug it all off. Buy a starter, or rebuild my old one ( I used the good one on my other ranger) And have the crossover pipe and new downpipe made. For now the exhuast is hooked to the manifold bypassing the turbo, so I can drive it in and get it done right at a shop.

Once all off this is completed, I have to repalce the front left rubber brake line I stole and use don my BII, repair the left bedside, repalce rear bumper and tail lights, and go and have the ole girl inspected to get a clear title.

Then I can paint it, maybe do a 2-3 inch drop, and run my 15x8 chrome wagonwheels, with cooper cobra tires... (im cheap already have thjose weheels,a nd got a stock pile of cooper cobras from the race car)
