Well now that I'm done with the clutch on the 'bird, it's been temporarily evicted from the garage so I can get to work on the recently acquired Mustang.

Trying to determine what to do with it engine-wise. This is definitely not going to be a high-dollar build, but I'm wondering what you guys would do with it and how you might go about accomplishing that. It's a 6 cylinder and the engine is reeeeeally noisy. We've been told that it has incorrect length push rods in it. I know the PO drove it daily - someone my brother knows. I haven't had a chance to open it up yet... probably doing that this weekend. If it is simply the pushrods then keeping the original engine is certainly an option, BUT I hate going slow.

So lets hear some thoughts!

Well it turns out the PO is a moron! It doesn't need a different length of pushrod. It has adjustable rockers! All it needed was adjustment! I don't know how they apparently didn't know that.

Looks like a 200 ci? Those engines run FOREVER. Owned a few 200's years back. Back in the 70s, I put 200K miles on one I rebuilt, sold the engine to a friend (the car rotted away around the engine), and he put another 100K on it. Still ran like new after 300K.

For more power, either a 2.3T or 5.0 HO EFI with a 5 speed. 5.0 would likely be cheaper to do, but a 2.3T would be way cool.

Yeah is't a 200. Since I adjusted the valves the power level feels like it has tripled! I took it down the street and back today and didn't have to get a running start for hills!

It is making a God awful racket, though. I do not yet know where it is coming from. I pulled the plug wires one at a time and it didn't change anything. Here's a Video of that:

Any ideas of what this could be or where it might be coming from? I have no experience with these things...

And yeah - I've definitely given some thought to a 2.3 swap. Beau over on TF has a blog about his 2.3T swap into a 68. I dunno... It's running great so if I can get this thing quieted down I may just leave the 200 in there.

I found what I think is the cause of the noise... Broken flex plate. I'm happy it's not something serious because I just bought the car from my brother since his wife wouldn't let him keep it... :nutkick: Big Grin

Here's an example of a 2.3T from a build I followed a few years ago.

That said, I would keep the 6 and turbocharge it instead and run an aftermarket engine management system. You've got plenty of room in there and with some serious headwork (perhaps even an Aussie head, if you can get one), you can make some serious power.

I still like my V8 in my 66, though... Smile

Well I have to replace the flex plate before I do anything else. Once I do that and actually drive the thing for a while I'll get a better idea of what I want to do. If that 200 runs as good as I think it does then I'll probably be leaving it in place for a while. Turbocharging the 6 has crossed my mind as well... Decisions, decisions.
