Hello all! I am a Brand new used Turbo Coupe owner, and I also have that sickness the makes me tear cars apart and make them "faster". I plan on keeping the stock looks, thats what attracked me to the car in the first place. My 88 T/C has 119,000 miles with the automatic trans, and from what I understand, I am down on power from the factory for Fords fear of warrenty replacement if the stock AOD trans was left in pieces at a stop light. I plan on upgrading the trans for a Monster Trans unit, so the wimpy auto trans will no longer be an issue. I do plan on keeping the auto,,, so finally my question is, will a 5 speed computer work with my auto to give me back the stolen ponies? or does the computer also control the trans?

The trans isnt an AOD, its an A4LD. AFAIK, there is no Aftermarket upgraded trans available "off the shelf" as there are for the AOD, AODE, AODEW, 4R70W. The A4LD isnt the best design, but can be upgraded with Explorer 4R44 internals and other aftermarket parts to improve strength. But this isnt cheap.
The A4LD is partly vacuum modulator controlled like the C4, C6, etc, and partly computer controlled. 1-2, 2-3 shifts are hydraulically controlled via vacuum modulator. 3-4 shift and converter lockup are controlled by the computer.
Might I suggest a 5 speed swap? It will make the car a whole lot more fun to drive.

I know is a stock replacement, but I have a buddy that builds my transmissions and said he could "make it stronger" We will see. He wasn't sure about the computer swap so I thought I would come here to get my answer. So I guess my next question would be can I use a stand alone computer(Stinger) with my auto? Thanks for your help.

Also to clarify...
Depending if your A4LD has two solenoids or one. All 87 autos and part of the 88 model year have one. The two solenoids was introduced mid year.
You can just install a manual boost controller and set it at 15psi for the boost differences on the computers.
