4th time no charm either

Well, I put in the 4th Motorcraft TFI today and surprise surprise. This one is no good either. Put it in, let the car sit 2 hours, started up not that great, stalled, (which it NEVER does) stalled again as I was backing out of the driveway, barely made it to the corner and it started bucking. Pulled back in the driveway, flashlight in hand, put the old SVO TFI back in, car runs PERFECT! This last one I had to pay for and send back the last (#3) bad one for a credit to my paypal as the parts place will only give 2 replacements on the same order. The guy was like "If this one doesn't work, I don't know WHAT we're going to do". I have to call Monday and see what happens now. I have the feeling I'm going to be eating this last one. How many times am I supposed to do this? There is a load of bad units out there and it's MY fault? If I have to eat this thing, if any of you regulars out there want to try this thing out, I am willing to send it,grease and all, and if it works for you, you can keep this nice new unit and send me back your known good one you pulled out. I don't feel like being Ford's test dummy any more. Everytime I tell my wife "I'll be in the driveway" (which is like daily) she asks me when I'm going to burn that peice of s*!t. I actually have the car running great, finally, and I still can't stay out from under the hood. Beyond frustrating.

Have you replaced the PIP. In my 8 month fruitless efforts, I replaced 3 TFI and 2 PIP's. I was about ready to junk out my TC. The only thing I hadn't tried was a complete rebuilt dizzy with the PIP and TFI on it. I ordered the rebuilt unit from Rock Auto, and what do you know, my car hasn't missed since that was in March. I have a theory that the pounding that you do in replacing the PIP causes the circuitry problems. I am sure you'll get this figured out, just don't give up, I almost did, what a relief that I didn't. Good luck!!

This thread shows all the steps he took in diagnosing the TFI's.

Ron, I replaced the pip when I did the tfi originally. pip is fine as the car runs great with the borrowed tfi.

I am attempting to install a Motorcraft dy-425 in my 88 TC. Pete just answered my post about having to grind down a 7/32" socket to make it fit the module holes to get to the bolts. Is that what you did? Now to the situation of defective Motorcraft modules which I did not want hear!! I paid $100.00 for this dang thing! I hope its good but if a problem occurs I am now in the know thanks to your posts. Now, to get er done and see if I can get my TC to start.

They make a TFI wrench, more like a knob with a socket on the end. Works great. Mines well broken in. lol.
Brian, if you saw one of my posts, I tried NAPA and it was also no good. If you look at the back it is identical to the Motorcraft. Every line, dimple and marking is IDENTICAL. Probably the same part. I keep putting in that borrowed TFI and have zero problems every time. It's funny how the original one that was in the car for probably forever may not even be bad. I changed the TFI and PIP originally because the car cut out totally on me twice on the highway. Totally died and came back in a few seconds while car was still cruising. I figure it was one of those things as the car never did THAT again. I even bought a new IRCM as my fan wouldn't come on and the first IRCM I bought was no good as the a/c comp wouldn't come on unless I tapped the IRCM or pushed the connector around. At least I only had to get one replacement on that. It was not a Motorcraft.

I am thinking I might send this Motorcraft TFI dy-425 module back to Rock Auto since in sounds like the odds are it is bad too. I have had it for a few weeks now but never put it in my 88 TC yet. Ford has changed the part # on this item quite a few times so the guy at Rock Auto thought I had the wrong part so sent me the return information to send it back. In the mean time I had confirmed with Ford that it is the right part I need so was going to keep it. But after paying $100.00 and it possibly being defective I would rather go with a different brand and not mess with Motorcraft.
