Can the 4R70W or older version be installed in a TC (1988)?

The A4LD seems like a real POS

You'd need a bellhousing adapter as well.

Be aware that the AOD / AODE / 4R70W is not a very efficient tranny, and sucks HUGE amounts of power.

Heres one of my thoughts on this: I have a 1000lb boat that Id like to tow, and I dont really like this A4LD, so Im thinking that with the 4R70, I could tow my boat and have a nicer transmission.

My 88 TC is a spare car, so it would be helpful to be able to tow the boat with it...

The 4R70 and the AODE are totally electronically controlled by the EEC in cars in which they are used and wouldn't work without extensive electrical modification The AOD would be a better choice as far as electronics is concerned but may be mechanically difficult to adapt to the 4 cyl.

Jeff, may I respectfully disagree with you about this family of transmissions. My other TC (Town Car) gets up to 30mpg at 70mph with the AODE. The previous Town Car AOD went over 300,000 miles with only two transmission fluid changes. That seems to me both efficient and robust.

I would assume it has to do with when the torque is made. 5.0 in your Town Car...makes lots of low end torque....at 1800 rpm....the average turbo coupe need 2500rpms.

It could work....

Good Luck

I have read several articles I trust that said that the AOD family is not as efficient as many other automatics. I agree it is a great family of trannies. I have owned a few cars with this family of trannies, and found them to be very robust. My 86 Tbird 5.0 / AOD used to get 28 to 30 mpg highway before I dumped the 2.73 rear and put in a 3.55 trac loc. Now it only gets 25 mpg highway, but city gas mileage (20 to 21 mpg) is about the same as before the gear change.
