Just bought an '86 TC 5 speed and for some reason it won't downshift directly into 3rd gear. If you shift from 4th to 2nd, then to 3rd it will engage no problem. Anybody run into this before?

Sounds like bad syncronizers. How about upshifting and down shifting in the other gears? Sean

Shifts perfectly! 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 all shift fine, it's just downshifting into third from 4th or 5th.

about 2.6 quarts of Dexron II or III ATF.

i tried the synthetic stuff last summer and i could not get it to sownshift from 4-3. I drained and replaced it with plain dexron 3 and i have had no problems since.

Hope this hepled

I considered buying that car a month or two ago, but I've got my hands full with my SC so I held off. A guy I know had seen it for sale near his house. Congrats on the purchase, I have a bunch of pics of your car and it looks very nice. I actually posted about the 3rd gear problem back when I was considering the car. I got mostly the same answers:
1. Syncros
2. Just deal with it

Good luck with the car,
Matt

Cool! My wife and I drove up there from SC and it was a fun drive. We didn't see snow until we got halfway through NC and then it started getting thicker! When we got to his house, I had a bit of trouble testing the car out because of all the ice and snow on the road LoL!
